MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) -- Democrat John Kerry, challenging the notion that questioning President Bush is unpatriotic, on Friday defended his right to criticize, saying he left ``some blood on a battlefield that President Bush never left anywhere.''
Campaigning at a local high school, the presidential candidate dismissed recent New Hampshire polls that showed him trailing rival Howard Dean by double digits and vowed to win the state -- although he distanced himself from the idea that New Hampshire is a must-win state.
``I'm the only other candidate beside Howard Dean that's raised over $20 million,'' he said. ``I have offices and efforts going on in 18 different states. We're ready to compete beyond New Hampshire.''
A student asked Kerry how he would counter Republican claims that Democrats are unpatriotic if they question Bush. ``I left some blood on a battlefield that President Bush never left anywhere,'' said Kerry, a decorated Vietnam War veteran. ``I'm not going to let President Bush or Dick Cheney or Tom DeLay or Don Rumsfeld or any of these people raise one question about the patriotism of any Democrat.''
