Democratic senators are giving more to campaign
Associated Press
WASHINGTON - Republican senators have been stingy contributors to the campaign committee helping re-elect their colleagues despite GOP fears that Democrats could topple them from power.
With less than four weeks to the election, Senate Democrats have contributed at least twice as much to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee as Senate Republicans have to the National Republican Senatorial Committee.
The disparity has helped keep the GOP committee, run by Sen. Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina, at a financial disadvantage and forced the Republican National Committee to weigh in with additional cash and help.
It also has caused grumbling among Republican operatives and strategists who say they can't understand why Senate Republicans aren't more willing to protect their majority and the committee chairmanships from which they derive power.
