Or if he'll conveniently pick one who is dead and unable to defend himself. This whole thing stinks.

32. The delay in naming the priest has been caused by
the time it took to research who would be a good, dead priest who couldn't defend himself, who was at Foley's church at the time he attended it. It took an army of private investigators about a week, it looks like.

They probably gave Foley some guy's name that he never met, or doesn't actually remember anything about. But he'll name him and sully his reputation.

36. Exactly what I said the day Foley 's "excuse" was made public.
Not that I subscribe to it, per se, but a Catholic friend of mine says Foley had better be careful because he is "fucking with God" if he blames an innocent priest.

If he has direct knowledge of a member of the clergy that abuses young boys, it's his civic duty to go to the authorities with his info.

12. Then he is even more reprehensible...
Because the truth is if he knew this, he should have already done so in order to protect other boys from this alleged pedophile priest. This does not excuse his behavior or make him somehow better -- I'm not saying you're saying that by the way -- and it only serves to make him all that much worst because if he kept quiet, he did so for selfish reasons if kids were in danger.

46. Damn right! Most "molestees" do not molest others.
In fact, some of them consider it extremely important that they NEVER visit on another person the hell THEY were put through!

I say this after working on hundreds of cases involving child custody. In such cases, people's secrets are often laid bare--including molestation.

11. DU the poll that is on the same page (re: GOP/Christian right)
Do you think the GOP will lose support from evangelical Christians at the polls in November?

Yes, it's clear the GOP was cynically playing on the Christian base's support, but not serving it.

No, the GOP is respectful of evangelicals, and its agenda serves traditional Christian values.

I don't care. I don't think we should mix religion and politics

So far, the cynical choice is ahead, w/ 55%

He was supposedly "raped" by a priest, so now he's a pedophile.

All Bill could say was he got laid as a teenager, so now he likes blow jobs.

15. That is very flawed comparison
Clinton was on the phone when Monica unzipped his pants, etc. She had already commited adultery with a married professor. She was a groupie and serial home-wrecker.

That hardly compares to a 16YO page from the backwoods who gets unwillingly stalked and harrassed by Foley.

54. It is Gerry Studds fault!
We all know that, I am sure we have all been told that too by a Republican when this comes up. None of them seem to remember Dan Crane (R)censured at the same time as Studds for doing the same thing with a 17 year old female page and he ran for re-election. But that is just a distraction to the fact that this is all Gerry Studds fault.

33. so far the only thing mark foley has done is to try to find an excuse for
his behavior.

first the abuse on him by a priest + the alcohol use, he said.

then, it was the alcohol use--but that didn't hold,

now is back to the abuse with the name of a live priest

so...

will it ever be,

it was done to me, it was wrong. i did it to others. it was wrong of me. i am sorry. the buck stops with me?

i understand that telling about it is part of his healing. good. he has many good ears listening to him: his therapist, his psychiatrist, his psychiatric nurse, his psychologist, his lawyer ...

so, he has made public all of what he needed to keep confidential in the midst of his treatment team.

but he has not given one inkling of an iota to the fact that he and only he is responsible for his behavior.

No offense meant toward you, Roon.

Close to one third of all women -- that is ALL WOMEN -- in this country were sexually molested as children. I don't know the percentage of men is but I'm willing to bet it's at least a quarter.

I never once molested a child or made indecent proposals to anyone underage, and I got it from three different men, not just one! And you know what? I'm not pretending to be a drunk, either!

45. AP: Mahoney (D) is now the favorite in the race.
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/southflorida/sfl-1017foley,0,5600803.story?coll=sfla-home-headlines

Foley's abrupt departure left behind an Internet-age sex scandal that shook Republican confidence -- and poll numbers -- little more than a month before elections at which their control of the House will be tested.

It also threw the spotlight on House Speaker Dennis Hastert regarding conflicting claims about what senior lawmakers knew, when they learned it and what they did about it.

The scenario has put a focus on the race that has sent national resources to a district that was an afterthought a few weeks ago.

Before the scandal, Foley was a popular incumbent who was easily expected to defeat Democrat Tim Mahoney. Now Mahoney is the favorite in the race.

Foley's name will remain on the ballot, but votes for him will count for state Rep. Joe Negron.
