Top party official brings campaign support
PUNTA GORDA -- The Republican National Committee's chairman, Ken Mehlman, visited with South Florida congressional candidate Joe Negron here Wednesday.
The visit, plus the fact the national Republican Party has slated $1 million in campaign spending to support his race against Democrat Tim Mahoney for the District 16 seat, indicates the party has confidence in a Negron victory, both Negron and Mehlman said.
Their comments came at a press conference with local party leaders at the Captain's Table restaurant in Fishermen's Village. "I'm here to say the national party, the state party, the governor and you name them support Joe Negron, and that we can and we will win that seat," said Melhman. "Our resources are here."
Negron was nominated by the state Republican Party to replace disgraced former congressman Mark Foley as the Republican nominee in the race.
