Former Clinton Official Wins Houston Mayor Race
Former Clinton Official Wins Houston Mayor Race
Sun December 7, 2003 01:42 AM ET

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Bill White, who served in the Clinton administration and was chairman of the Texas Democratic Party, easily beat a Hispanic Republican endorsed by President Bush on Saturday in a runoff race to become mayor of Houston.

White had a 62 percent to 38 percent lead with virtually all of the votes counted.

A wealthy businessman and lawyer, White spent a record $8.6 million, including $2.2 million of his own money to defeat Orlando Sanchez, who was making his second attempt to become Houston's first Hispanic mayor.

White, 49, will replace current Mayor Lee Brown, who was the first black mayor of the nation's fourth largest city, but after six years in office was barred by term limits from running again.

10. Does the queen bitch live there?
I hope they do a lot of construction in their neighborhood so that they are penned in and can't get out.

2. "Hispanic Republican" = "Cuban American"
Being crowned "first Hispanic mayor". Typical Orrin HATCH spin. This fellow might be Hispanic, the way Clarence THOMAS is African American, but these wingnuts don't represent their home groups.

5. why I won't donate to NPR
listening on the way home from work I heard this story without knowing Houston politics. I figured the winner was Repuke by NPR using the "millionaire businessman", and thought the loser was Dem by labeling Sanchez their "potential first Hispanic mayor". I've heard the story twice this morning, and they never mentioned White being tied to the Clinton's or party affiliations. Give the facts, or don't do the story at all.

7. Hmm...easily beat a candidate endorsed by Smirk?
Could it be the Chimpster's electoral influence is fading? Let's hope the fuck so!
