White House criticizes Kerry's use of the F-word
Another article from Salon:

When asked in the interview about the success of rival candidate Howard Dean, whose anti-war message has resounded with supporters, Kerry responded: "When I voted for the war, I voted for what I thought was best for the country. Did I expect Howard Dean to go off to the left and say, 'I'm against everything?' Sure. Did I expect George Bush to f--- it up as badly as he did? I don't think anybody did."

:snip:

"That's beneath John Kerry," the president's chief of staff, Andrew Card, said on CNN's "Late Edition."

"I'm very disappointed that he would use that kind of language," Card said. "I'm hoping that he's apologizing at least to himself, because that's not the John Kerry that I know."

The Kerry campaign said the Massachusetts senator had no regrets.

"John Kerry saw combat up close, and he doesn't mince words when it comes to politicians who put ideological recklessness ahead of American troops," said spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter. "I think the American people would rather Card and the rest of the White House staff spend more time on fixing Bush's flawed policy in Iraq than on Sen. Kerry's language."

:end snip:

Personally, I hope the Kerry campaign hits back at the bush* team like "major-league assholes"

49. Bush held up his middle finger...
...during a meeting with congressional leadership. It was Bush's way of describing Saddam Hussein's policy towards the United States. Senator Tom Daschle (D-SD) describes the scene in "Like No Other Time," his recent memoir.

Daschle observes that Bush demands a strict dress code from senators and representatives (Bush once demanded that Representative Richard Gephardt put his suit jacket back on for their White House meeting, citing "the rules") but apparently had no qualms with making an obscene gesture in that august group (my words, not his).

24. I did a quick Google search and found this......
.....from the Texas Observer.

http://www.texasobserver.org/showArticle.asp?ArticleID=264

Dubya and the Press

In the Texas media, the Governor walks on water.
But elsewhere, he's beginning to get caught in the backwash.

by Louis Dubose, Julie Hollar, and Nate Blakeslee

It's no secret that the Texas press corps loves George W. Bush. And his affection for the hometown media seems as sincere as ours for him. Few politicians are so completely engaging, so utterly disarming. At home in Austin, every press conference begins with a friendly exchange and ends with a joke or personal comment.

<snip>

Serving to illuminate the brighter aspects of Bush's character are McKinnon; a tattooed beer-drinking biker whom Bush steps out of the crowd to embrace at an Austin political rally; and crowds of Bush admirers. Bush himself reveals the dark side. Most disturbing is his callous mockery of Karla Faye Tucker, the first woman executed in Texas in more than 100 years. Bush, who refused to consider a thirty-day stay for Tucker and did not push his parole board to consider clemency, later denied that he made light of the execution of Tucker in the interview. But the offending passage is hard to refute. Bush said he refused to meet with TV interviewer Larry King, when King came to Texas to report on the Tucker execution. Then his comments get weird:

"I watched his interview with though," Bush said. "He asked her real difficult questions, like 'What would you say to Governor Bush?'"

"What was her answer," I wonder.

"Please," Bush whimpers, his lips pursed in mock desperation, "don't kill me."

Bush was also generous in his use of the expletive "fuck," a sure turn-off for Christian-right voters. Conservative syndicated columnist George Will was so disturbed by the Talk profile that he actually did some reporting, reviewing a copy of the Larry King/Tucker interview and finding that Tucker had said nothing similar to what Bush told Carlson. Will wondered what Bush was thinking, or if he was thinking - and asked if Bush has the character to serve as president.

Anyone want to e-mail this to a friend? (Andy Card)? There's a link at the top of the page!

12. right on it immediately aren't they
Kerry should not have done this, as much as anyhone agrees with him and are proud he could be so down to earth as to use this popular obscenity in language. Trust me--many people do not like it-at all-they cringe at it--as much and as popular as it is amongst the younger generations and as much as it perfectly fits the occasion. I do not think Kerry did a wise thing here. Can anyone imaging Clinton or Hillary using this type of rhetoric in public? Or Dean or Clark? Not a good choice here, Kerry. You are coming off as unwise and desperate.

19. Card shouldn't critize Kerry it, either, IMHO
I don't think Senator Kerry should have used this particular word, no matter how accurate it is, but I find Card acting as language police much worse. It is just kind of a none-of-his-business-type thing --- whether this is appropriate or not I would say is entirely up to the voters, since I believe using the powers and prestige of any public office to advocate non-objective 'morality' is an abuse of such office.

And besides, it strongly suggests that he can not respond to the criticism, and just chose to attack the choice of the words instead. You know, he may as well charge that General Clark's use of words like 'consigliere' is elitist and out of touch with regular people since many folks (including me) have to reach for the dictionary to get the precise meaning

27. Then there's the Judy Woodruff/Al Hunt incident
In 1987 at a Dallas restaurant, Bush, apparently drunk, approached a table occupied by Al Hunt, of The Wall Street Journal, Judy Woodruff, of CNN, and their four-year-old son, and burst out with, "You no good fucking sonofabitch, I will never forget what you wrote!" Hunt had omitted the name of Bush's father from a list of possible presidential candidates he had sent in to Washingtonian magazine—because Vice President Bush had yet to declare his candidacy.

All opposition to Bush is now hate speech. It's the typical tactic of accusing others of what you do so well yourself. It needs careful handling.

I get the sense they're starting to realize they're in a hole. If they push Kerry's use of an adult slang word to an adult magazine, bush is going to come out looking like more of a fruad than he is seen to be now. So I hope they do whine about this all week.

Funniest thing---they don't argue his observation-assesment,
not reacting to the opinion voiced in large readership high profile mgz. Can't challenge his statement. Love that.

And that weak lame come-back, that Kerry's "irrelevant"--just big enough to run for US Prez, be given interview in major publication, have experience in evaluating any military situation. Those weenies really take to co-opting 60's protest
statement on the establishment. From them and decades after it just sounds way juvenile.

54. That's NOT a denial, Mr. Card...
Note that Andrew Card does not deny that Bush is f**king up, just objecting that Kerry used the word. Hmmm...

Kerry let his guard down a little... I think that indicates he was actually speaking his mind, rather than making just another pre-scripted "statement." That makes the interview worth reading.

Funny thing is, this will have the same effect on Kerry's interview as the Fox lawsuit had on Al Franken's book. Shine a huge spotlight on it, and drive sales through the roof, rather than just letting it pass by. It's kind of like Playboy... people don't buy RS for the political interviews, but for the pictures of Britney Spears and the music reviews. I'm sure many of the subscribers are under 18.

But after this flap, you can bet a LOT of registered voters will seek out this interview and read all about why Kerry thinks Bush is doing a bad job.

Andy Card, I think YOU just f**ked up, too.
