Nicaragua passes ban on all abortions
Nicaragua's Congress voted to ban all abortions, with the support of previously pro-choice Sandinista lawmakers. The president must sign the bill into law.

BY FILADELFIO ALEMAN
Associated Press

MANAGUA - Nicaragua's Congress voted Thursday to ban all abortions, including those to save a mother's life.

If signed into law by President Enrique Bolaños, the measure would eliminate a century-old exception to Nicaragua's abortion ban that permits the procedure if three doctors certify that the woman's health is at risk.

Fifty-two lawmakers voted for the measure. Nine lawmakers abstained and 29 others did not attend the session.

CRIMINALIZING WOMEN

Bolaños has proposed increasing prison sentences for illegal abortions -- currently around six years -- to 10 to 30 years for women who have the procedure as well as those who assist them.

1. THIS IS WHAT REPUBLICANS WANT FOR US
South Dakota should have made clear that the RW is serious about this kind of atrocity against women in the US, but there are many liberals who continue to call it a non-issue and say the Democrats should stop using the issue of women's lives as a "litmus test" for candidates.

This is where we are headed if we continue to underestimate them. Don't kid yourself, and don't insult me with your sad rationalizations.

5. I couldn't agree more...
We (women, liberals, politicians) need to unite on the issue instead of trying to sweep it under the rug. The RW is dangerous and is a serious threat to women's rights. They are biting at the bit to take this right away from our women and will succeed in doing so if the left doesn't wake up and take a firm stand.

A few things that I think about and get bothered by...

1. the fact that Right Wingers and anti-abortion ppl are labeled "Pro-Life when they go to great lengths (including indisputable murder) to impose their beliefs.

2. the fact that the categories are "Pro-Life" and "Pro-Choice." These titles are not opposites and it is improper to pit these titles against each other. I consider myself both. The categories "Anti-Choice" and "Pro-Choice" would be more appropriate.

3. let's say the abortion were made illegal here in the US, like the situation in Nicaragua. Would an abortion be considered murder making the woman a murderer? Would states with the death penalty be allowed to put a woman to death for having an abortion? Would Americans feel comfortable with putting women and girls to death, especially if the abortion were performed due to rape and incest? I would love to hear the RW's answers to these questions.

8. Women around the world must unite
and BOYCOTT any country that denies basic health care to women. I will never set foot in Nicaragua or buy anything with a Nicaraguan label until this cruel, medieval law is repealed.

10. Isn't it ironic that the group in the US that is pro-life is also pro-war?
