Brazil's President meets Sheikh Zayed in Abu Dhabi: we are not hostile to America, rather demand sovereignty

<clips>

President of the United Arab Emirates UAE Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan stressed during his meeting with Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva yesterday his country's care to develop its relations with aBrazil at a time when Lula stressed that "our policy is not based on confrontation with the USA," rather pursuing "a genuine sovereignty."

He criticized the US policy in the Middle East, and called for a greater role for the UN in Iraq and the region. He also stressed Brazil's attempt to get a permanent seat at the UN Security Council.

The United Arab Emirates UAE official news agency said that the two leaders discussed means of supporting bilateral cooperation relations in the economic and trade fields, as well as the march of peace in the Middle East. Sheikh Zayed expressed his appreciations for "Brazil's President and government over Brazil's hosting of the Arab community there. "

Lula also met Abu Dhabi crown prince, Khaleifa Bin Zayed al-Nahyan. In a press conference before the meeting, Lula said he had notified the US President personally he is opposing the invasion of Iraq. He said "it is not only the views and position of Brazil, it is rather the position of the whole world, almost." He added "when we develop our international relations, we do not do that with the aim to counter any country. We are a sovereign state and pursue a certain strategy.. Sovereignty should be genuine."

1. SOVEREIGNTY--it can't be stressed enough.
I agree with DaSilva's stress on national integrity. It's the basis of international peace and cooperation. Those who wish to destroy the nation-state on the basis of "arms proliferation" or "human rights" are threatening world war.

6. The Bushistas don't believe in it except of course when it comes to
the USSA. Lula is not gonna be a US lap dog that's for sure. Check that remark Lula made about trade barriers: "...Brazil must strengthen the G20 group of developing countries so it can fight more aggressively in global trade talks to reduce farm trade barriers." The third world is banding together and it's not good news for Uncle Sam.

3. Looks like Lula da Silva's doing more about poverty and hunger
than passing some more money around to his wealthy cronies:

UN agency to boost Brazil's twin-track Zero Hunger Programme

Signing agreement witnessed by FAO Director-General
8 December – The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said today it had signed a $5.8 million agreement with the government of Brazil, strengthening its collaboration and support of the country's twin-track Zero Hunger Programme, which aims to address the root causes of poverty that result in hunger.

"Just ten months after the Programme was launched we are already seeing tangible results," Henri Carsalade, FAO Assistant Director-General for Technical Cooperation, said of the scheme, which has two parallel strategies - an emergency response to provide food for the hungry and a longer-term strategy to improve professional training, reduce poverty and stimulate food production.

"We can already begin to evaluate the Programme's impact not merely in the improved nutritional status of the pilot communities - the most immediate impact - but also through changes in other areas - such as education, health and living conditions," Mr. Carsalade added in a statement released in Rome. Good people are remembered for their acts of concern and respect for their fellow man. We are seeing more REAL leaders coming out into the open, into the void!

5. Moving From Oman To Abu Dhabi In January
Shitfire this is an exciting part of the world. Although being an American in this region can be a bit weird. At least I am away from "THE BUSH" as my fellow Omanis call him.
