GOP furious about timing of Rumsfeld resignation
http://www.thehill.com/thehill/export/TheHill/News/Frontpage/110906/rumsfeld2.html

Donald Rumsfeld's abrupt resignation from the Pentagon the day after Republicans lost both chambers of Congress has infuriated some GOP officials on and off Capitol Hill.

Members and staff still reeling from Tuesday's rout are furious about the administration's decision to dump the controversial defense secretary one day after their historic loss, they said in a series of interviews about the election results.

President Bush announced Rumsfeld's resignation on Wednesday and named Bob Gates, a former CIA chief and president of Texas A&M University, as his replacement.

"The White House said keeping the majority was a priority, but they failed to do the one thing that could have made a difference," one House GOP leadership aide said Thursday. "For them to toss Rumsfeld one day after the election was a slap in the face to everyone who worked hard to protect the majority."

<snip>

"They did this to protect themselves, but they couldn't protect us?" another Republican aide said yesterday.

35. I think so, too,
GoddessOfGuinness.

He didn't dump Rumsfeld because the man behind the curtain, Dick Cheney, didn't want him to. After such a stunning defeat, he turned away from the man behind the curtain to Poppy. There was a rumor that Poppy had wanted Rumsfeld gone a long time ago.

I think the rest of *'s term will have more of a Bush 41 influence and less of a Darth Cheney influence.

Edited on Fri Nov-10-06 12:08 AM by rocknation
The official GOP epitaph.

This confirms my suspicions--Rummy's disposal was a weapon of mass diversion. I also suspect that the letters in those military papers were planted.

Had the election maintained the status quo, I'm sure Rummy would still be employed--indeed, George probably would have publicly denounced the letters in Rummy's defense. But the Dem victory presented two problems: how to get the national media to stop covering it, and how to "assure" the Dems (and the people who voted them in) that George has leadership qualities and isn't inflexible.

Aside from that, I have to ask: "Are they REALLY that naieve?" Don't those GOP aides know that the Rethugs are ALL ABOUT protecting themselves and not their "little people?" Didn't they notice how quickly Mark Foley, Kenneth Blackwell, Katherine Harris, and the guy who ran against Lieberman and Lamont were disposed of when they didn't serve their leadership's purposes? Yet they STILL didn't know what they should expect? Cue the DU "Cry Me A River" String Quartet!

Gee, they're only now noticing that the Bush administration places its own political considerations above everything else? How many people, military and civilian, have died in Afghanistan and Iraq to cover for this administrations errors, miscalculations and blunders? How many people have been ignored, silenced or tortured in the name of political expediency?

Bummer, guys. Your political leader is a sociopath. Welcome to our world of the last half dozen years.

32. August 3rd: Hillary grills Rummy in hearing.
It was a pre-emptive strike. How could Bush fire Rummy after that w/o looking weak. Hillary is no dummy.

"Mr. Secretary, we're glad you're here. In your opening statement, you referenced the common sense of Americans. Well, I think it's fair to say that that collective common sense overwhelmingly does not either understand or approve of the way you and the Administration are handling Iraq and Afghanistan. Under your leadership there have been numerous errors in judgment that have led us to where we are in Iraq and Afghanistan. We have a full fledged insurgency and full blown sectarian conflict in Iraq. Now, whether you label it a civil war or not, it certainly has created a situation of extreme violence and the continuing loss of life among our troops and of the Iraqis. You did not go into Iraq with enough troops to establish law and order. You disbanded the entire Iraqi army, now we're trying to recreate it. You did not do enough planning for what is called Phase IV and rejected all the planning that had been done previously to maintain stability after the regime was overthrown. You underestimated the nature and strength of the insurgency, the sectarian violence, and the spread of Iranian influence."

61. Others are likely grateful
To have both a reason and an active step toward dismantling Bush's disastrous domination of the party. Expect more of the same as junior ambles dizzily through the wreckage tossing cronies to the wolves. There is no lame duck in history so vulnerable by dint of lack of personal attributes. And never has a party been so incapacitated by subservience so disgraceful to the act of gutting the Constitutional power of Congress down to the management of their campaigns.
