Iraq police kill American, Briton wounded

ZUBAYR, Iraq, Nov 17 (Reuters) - Iraqi police said they killed an American in civilian clothes and wounded another on Friday near the southern town of Zubayr in a clash that a British military spokesman said wounded a British civilian.

Captain Tane Dunlop said the British civilian security contractor was wounded in the clash between a civilian convoy and Iraqi security forces in the Zubayr area, but he could not confirm if there were any other casualties.

A police officer in Zubayr, an enclave of the Sunni Arab minority in predominantly Shi'ite south Iraq, told Reuters customs police stopped a U.S.-made four-wheel drive vehicle in the late morning on suspicion it had entered Iraq illegally.

The occupants turned out to be Americans and opened fire, killing two policemen, he said.

He said the incident did not appear to be related to the hijack of another civilian convoy in the Safwan area on Thursday in which four Americans and an Austrian were seized by gunmen at what appears to have been a fake police checkpoint.

I apprecaite the wording isn't that ambiguous - just poorly expressed. Are they saying the Americans opened fire killing two policemen ? If so there may be more to this than is obvious from the news report.

5. Yeah, the way I read it, the mercs in the 4-wheel drive opened

fire on the Iraqi cops at the checkpoint. The Iraqi cops then returned fire. These mercs should be expelled from the country, they cause more problems than they solve (I think the same could be said for the US military, but at least the military has a modicum of control and oversight)...
