Schwarzenegger considering suspending school funding guarantee
Schwarzenegger considering suspending school funding guarantee

SACRAMENTO – In what may prove a dramatic reversal of a key campaign promise, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Tuesday he is considering suspending Proposition 98, the landmark school funding guarantee.

"We're working with, you know, the education community to see how we can work together, for them to help with us this budget crisis," Schwarzenegger said during an interview on CNN that aired Tuesday.

"To maybe have a suspension or to have some relief there so we can pull out of these next two years and then pay it back, maybe," Schwarzenegger said.

Despite facing a budget shortfall he estimates as much as $25 billion, Schwarzenegger has repeatedly said he would protect schools from budget cuts that undoubtedly would be faced by other departments – a vow that helped win him support during the recall election among educators and parents.

I'm sure the media (Tweety and others) will be up in arms about "his word" all week.

1. Public education is the first thing all politicians exploit.
Schwarzenegger kicked off his gubernatorial bid by saying something like, "I want to do something to help public schools," then campaigning for some program involving, as I recall, after-school activities.

What a crock. Why worry about after-school crap when the hours kids spend IN school are such a waste? And why will no one blow the whistle on corrupt school officials and teachers unions?

2. Now isn't this interesting
I thought the Gropenator said he could cut the car tax AND fund education, unlike Grey Davis. Now that he's governor, all promises go out the window....but then how realistic were his promises to begin with? Hope Californians take note and remember this. Anyone getting up a recall petition yet?

3. schwantzenagger is a liar and as ignorant as bush
Education gets about half of the state budget. It would be extremely difficult to make up the deficit quickly without affecting education. Last week, he proposed cutting money to poor and disabled, the money that assists people to keep them out of nursing homes.

He already rescinded the car tax increase. That was not really a tax increase, it was the orginial amount of the car tax and Gray Davis had lowered it in better years and then raised it when we needed it. That car tax goes to the citys for police and fire protection and other city services.

What all this amounts to is ahnold's having made campaign promises with absolutely no clue on the CA budget or government. His lies started with "we are going to open up the books and see what's there." The CA budget process already is a very open and public process. His proposal to get a long-term 30 year bond to pay off a current deficit simply shifts the tax to the next generation. It is an absurb and irresponsible proposal.

Yesterday, to add to his list to lies, he decided to call off that investigation he was going to do of himself for groping.

7. Facing up to $25 billion now
are we? Funny, when he took over it was only $8 billion -- down from the $56 billion via a compromise budget deal with the Republicans in the legislature in JULY. Of course, the media whores, all through the campaign, kept repeating the $56 billion deficit.

The car tax deal was WILSON'S (media whores kept blaming on Davis). It was a provision by which, when the state had a deficit, the tax would remain the same. When the state had a surplus (as we did pre the Enron gouging) the tax was cut. Enter Bush's* Enron buddies, ripping off the state of BILLIONS of tax dollars, and the car tax went back up to it's original amount (during Wilson).

The misinformation coming out of the media during the recall was nothing short of astounding -- even for them.

15. This really pisses me off
because I think a lot of his voters -- at least the ones I met -- supported him because of his committment to maintaining funding for education. It was part of his "moderate" agenda. Grrrr.

16. My sister, a lifelong Republican...
Is now shouting "recall" on Arnie! She works at a school district, and she's very pro-tax, pro-public services, and realizing she isn't as much of a Republican as she thought she was. She's been staying with us for a month, and we've been showing her the news she doesn't get from Fox. A few more weeks and we may at least have her at "Independent".

So, when can we start the recall drive?
