Chen stands up to Bush

TAIPEI, Taiwan (CNN) -- Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian says he won't be swayed from plans to hold a controversial referendum on China's missile threat despite a stinging rebuke from the U.S. president.

George W. Bush on Tuesday warned Taipei against holding a referendum that could antagonize China, saying he wanted to maintain the status quo between the two rivals.

Bush's warning -- made after he met Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao at the White House -- was described by analysts as the toughest American language used against a Taiwanese leader in decades.

And we stand for freedom? Ya right!!!!

I got to give props to Wen for putting Bush in checkmate position on this one. He made him look like such an arse.

6. He better kowtow.
Now that he's blatantly exposed our every military weakness, China knows we can't do a damn thing if it attacks Taiwan.

We could nuke 'em and start World War III, but China DOES have WMD, and Coward George never tackles a real opponent. Other than that, we're fully committed elsewhere, ain't we?

5. I think it is a wise move for Bush

Just think the reality that we need China support in North Korea, Iraq, and many other issues.

With large portion of our standing force in Iraq and Afganistan, we better not face China now by ourselves.

By maintaining status quo, we can sell weapons to Taiwan, while keeping China's navy near mainland, it in our best interest now not to provoke China.

7. I'm surprised it took China...
...so long to exploit our weakness (brought on by George's adventures). For the first time in my memory, the most powerful country in the world is truly vulnerable.

8. We do not lose anything
If there are enough support to war against China when China does attack Taiwan, he can reserse easily, since it is changing the status quo.

9. it's Realpolitik
Which until the Iraq debacle was the forte of Republicans. Remember it was Nixon who signed the agreement with China that recognized Chinese sovereignty over Taiwan.
