Cheney in Riyadh to discuss 'new initiative' with king

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (CNN) -- Vice President Dick Cheney arrived in Saudi Arabia on Saturday for a day of talks with King Abdullah about what a Saudi adviser described as a "broad new initiative for the Middle East."

Cheney and Abdullah are expected to discuss the war in Iraq as well as other matters including Iran's influence in the region; Syria; Hamas in Gaza and Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora's government, the adviser told CNN.

The visit is the outcome of at least two months of work on the new initiative, the adviser said.

Saudi Arabia and the United States see "eye-to-eye" on all issues, he added. His country will take a leading role in the region and will become "a linchpin of U.S. policy for the next two years."

5. I thought the word was that Cheney had been marginalized
and all but out on his ass. That Condi was promoted to running the show behind the scenes while waiting for daddy to have his fixers doing the dirty work. Remember all the reading of the tea leaves right after rummy was shot and * had to invite the Dems into the oval office to make nice. so what happened? Did all of the insulting magazine covers and political cartoons about daddy coming to the rescue piss off lord pissypants so much that he is trying an end-run with Dick one more time? Or what?

9. This news is very disturbing on several levels.
The Vice-President of the United States is engaged in talks with the leader of Saudi Arabia: The country from which fifteen of the nineteen highjackers on 9/11/01 originated.

Isn't our Vice-President negotiating with terrorists?

Worse, Invisible Dick Cheney has never negotiated anything in the light of day. It's always with the cockroaches of the night. Why is he our emissary to King Abdullah?

They see "eye to eye"?

So, if I have this right, Dick Cheney and the King whose citizens attacked our country are in complete agreement.

There's a reason this treason is going down right now...the neocons are out of power in five weeks.

Saudi Arabia

International Religious Freedom Report 2004
Released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor

The country is ruled by a monarchy with a legal system based on Islamic law (Shari'a). The Government does not provide legal protection for freedom of religion, and such protection does not exist in practice. Islam is the official religion, and the law requires that all citizens be Muslims. The Government prohibits the public practice of non-Muslim religions. The Government recognizes the right of non-Muslims to worship in private; however, it does not always respect this right in practice and does not define this right in law.

There generally was no change in the status of religious freedom during the period covered by this report, although the Government continued a campaign to foster greater moderation and tolerance of religious diversity. The Government enforces a strictly conservative version of Sunni Islam. Muslims who do not adhere to the officially sanctioned Salafi (commonly called "Wahhabi") tradition can face severe repercussions at the hands of the Mutawwa'in (religious police). The Government continued to detain Shi'a leaders. Members of the Shi'a minority continued to face political and economic discrimination, including limited employment opportunities, little representation in official institutions, and restrictions on the practice of their faith and on the building of mosques and community centers. The Government has stated publicly that its policy is to allow non-Muslims to worship privately; however, this policy is not consistently enforced, resulting in the violation of some non-Muslims' freedom of worship and causing other non-Muslims to worship in fear of harassment and in such a manner as to avoid discovery.

10. Any initiative that ignores Palestinian concerns is doomed to failure!
This is nothing more than Uncle Sam providing support to the despots on our payroll.

The civil war in Iraq, and the partition of that country, will bring about a Suni reprisal against US allies in the region beginning with the Saudi royal family.

I'm not saying they wouldn't if they thought they could get away with it
but they are too vulnerable to be throwing stones.

23. 'lets do Iran you are Sunni, ha ha'. Good joke Dick
has anyone seen the war gaming on attacking Iran?
When I analysed it the US is in a very bad position if the Iranians are able to effectively use their military. could the Saudi's know this and the US is falling for Bin Laden's tricks again?
