Treasury Tax Policy Official to Leave (To spend more time w/family)
By Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- The Treasury Department's point person on tax policy, Pam Olson, notified President Bush on Wednesday that she intends to leave the agency early next year.

Olson joined the department in February 2001 and was promoted to her current post as assistant secretary for tax policy on Sept. 26, 2002. At Treasury, Olson worked on policies to cut taxes, simplify the tax code and crack down on companies and people who use dubious shelters to avoid paying federal taxes.

In a letter to Bush, Olson said her resignation would be effective after the 2005 budget is completed, which Treasury spokeswoman Tara Bradshaw said would be around the end of January or the beginning of February.

"I have found it extremely difficult to balance the requirements of the office with time for my family," Olson wrote in the letter to Bush. "Consequently, I have concluded that the time has come for me to return to the private sector to allow me to spend more time with them."
