Bush Campaign Tiptoed Into Arlington HQ

Bush Campaign Tiptoed Into Arlington HQ
Few Took Notice -- Not Even Democrats
By Jerry Markon
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, December 11, 2003; Page VA14

In a dull red-brick office tower, a few blocks from the heart of the Democratic power structure that has controlled Arlington for a generation, a newcomer to the local political scene is setting up shop.

On first blush, the politician might blend in better in Arlington, Tex., where he helped his beloved Texas Rangers build a new ballpark.

President Bush in Arlington, Va.? The tough, conservative-loving president in the county considered so liberal, by Virginia standards anyway, that it's been called the People's Republic of Arlington by some Old Dominion conservatives?

It's true. With discretion so complete that it resembles a special-ops mission, Bush has established his national campaign headquarters in Arlington. The nerve center of his reelection drive is housed inside a complex of three buildings, set back about 100 yards from the street, near the Courthouse Metro station.

1. GREAT line in this article....
"We're extremely gratified to have a few extra Republicans here, especially of such stature," said Jim Pebley, a prominent Republican and former Arlington County Civic Federation president. "It's fairly ironic in a county that has been dominated so long by the local Democratic Party. It's kind of like having your big brother come to visit after the neighborhood kids have been pushing you around."

6. Uh, not to be pedantic, but
there ARE no tigers in Africa. It is an Asian animal.

Lions? Okay.

8. Python
He was quoting Monty Python The Meaning of Life, where a character says, increduously, "Tigers? ...in Africa?"

5. Got the TX Taxpayers to Pay for the Rangers Stadium
And the boondoggle of the taxpayers paying for an exclusive land development.

But our media is too, uh, RESPECTFUL (cough) to get into things like that. Oh, Arlington is Liberal? No wonder they were punished.

7. The sheer apotheosis of empty rhetoric and hypocrisy aren't they?
Edited on Thu Dec-11-03 11:22 AM by benfranklin1776
What is so ironic is that this move is their testament to the success of Democratic policies and administrations. Arlington has been so successful because of its Democratic constituency and governmental administration that it is, in the words of the Bush campaign spokesman (from the article) "{a} great neighborhood" and they liked the fact that there are "a lot of services here." Proof positive that Rethugs are the penultimate hypocrites constantly moaning about the supposed "rotten evils" of Democratic governance but when the chips are down they eagerly embrace the benefits and qualities of life that Democratic administration's create.

14. Regrettably though when they move in the neighborhood goes to hell
From the article:

"When she heard the Bush campaign had arrived, Westcott {manager of a nearby book and record store} said, she realized she was prominently displaying several recently released political humor books, such as the one by comedian Al Franken, that make fun of the president. So she gave other books more prominent display instead."

Musn't let the "freshly scrubbed" worker drones see anything that punctures their fragile mental image of their imperious leader.

16. Yes pathetic isn't it? Self censorship as an act of imperial fealty.
A modern version of bootlicking the king to curry favor. I will join you at the vomitorium.
