Iraqi Soldier Fatally Wounded by Marine

CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq - An Iraqi soldier was fatally wounded during an altercation with a Marine at a post at the Fallujah Government Center Dec. 30.

The Marine, assigned to 1st Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 5, has been assigned to administrative duties.

The Marines and Iraqi soldiers from both units have manned combined security posts since arrival of the Marine unit several months ago.

"Marines and Iraqis from the two units continue to live, eat, and fight alongside each other," said Coalition spokesman Marine Lt.

Col. Bryan Salas. "This will not impact our mission to continue the transition of the security responsibility to the Iraqi Army."

"Fatally wounded." Sounds so, you know, happenstance. "Well, sure I wounded him, but I didn't think it would be fatal. Poor guy just up and died." So much more benign than "killed" or "murdered."

I don't have any special knowledge; I was just making a generalized comment on the horrible locution "fatally wounded." It should go in a file somewhere next to "neutralized with extreme prejudice" or whatever anti-matter language phrase the Reaganauts concocted to avoid using the word "assassinate" in Central America during the 1980s.
