Moroccan terror suspect Mzoudi seeks German asylum: report
HAMBURG - Abdel-Ghani Mzoudi, the Moroccan on trial in Hamburg as an alleged September 11 accomplice, is now seeking asylum in Germany, fearing his capture by the Americans if he were to be sent back to his home country, the weekly Der Spiegel reported.


The report comes just after the surprise development in his trial when the Hamburg court ordered his release from custody after the court cited new evidence raising doubts about whether Mzoudi was privy to the September 11 plot.

Mzoudi’s lawyer, Gul Pinar, said that her client now has applied for political asylum in Germany to avoid his eventually being returned to Morocco once his trial is completed. She said he fears his capture by the Americans, Der Spiegel said.

The magazine’s report also focused on the controversial piece of evidence - a summary of an interrogation of Al Qaeda suspect Ramzi bin al-Shibh, now in US detention - which the Hamburg court had cited in deciding to release Mzoudi from custody.
