Official calls for expansion of Iran-Pakistan economic ties

Given the potentials in Iran and Pakistan, the two sides should expand economic ties, said chairman of the board of directors and managing director of Iran Foreign Investment Company on Thursday.

Mehdi-Reza Darvishzadeh made the remarks on the sidelines of a ceremony to sign an agreement with the Pakistani Minister of State for Finance Omar Ayub Khan on the establishment of Iran-Pakistan joint investment company and expressed hope that cooperation between the two countries will increase once the company is set up.

Describing Iran and Pakistan as two great and active countries in the Islamic world, Darvishzadeh said that historical affinities between the two nations are deep, and the cooperation should be developed more than ever. Expressing satisfaction over the moves to establish joint investment company between Tehran and Islamabad, he added that the Iran Foreign Investment Company has so far invested in Brazil, Germany, Egypt, Namibia, Sudan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Oman, Bahrain and Yemen.

For his part, Ayub Khan expressed hope that the establishment of the company will improve economic cooperation between Tehran and Islamabad. "Pakistan seeks Iranian companies' investment in Baluchestan province which has a common border with Iran," he added. Iran and Pakistan inked an agreement to establish the joint investment company at a cost of dlrs 25 million as the initial capital with stakes divided on a 50-50 basis.

ISLAMABAD:
Pakistan and Iran established a Joint Investment Company to carry out business of investing and finance enterprises and projects particularly export oriented firms of the two countries on commercial basis.

A Memorandum of Understanding in this connection was signed here on Thursday in the Ministry of Finance. Minister of State for Finance Omer Ayub Khan led the Pakistani side which comprised of Secretary Finance Syed Tanvir Ali Agha and Istaqbal Mehdi while a three member delegation from Iran Foreign Investment Company headed by its Chairman and Managing Director Dr. Mehdireza Darvishzadeh, Iranian Ambassador Mashallah Shakeri and Deputy Chairman Syed Mansoor Mir Abedeni were present on the occasion.

Pak-Iran joint investment company has been sponsored equally by the Ministry of Finance, Pakistan and Foreign Investment Company of Iran.
