Pelosi hints at denying Bush Iraq funds
Pelosi hints at denying Bush Iraq funds

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said newly empowered Democrats will not give President Bush a blank check to wage war in Iraq, hinting they could deny funding if he seeks additional troops.

"If the president chooses to escalate the war, in his budget request, we want to see a distinction between what is there to support the troops who are there now," she said in an interview broadcast Sunday.

"The American people and the Congress support those troops. We will not abandon them. But if the president wants to add to this mission, he is going to have to justify it and this is new for him because up until now the Republican Congress has given him a blank check with no oversight, no standards, no conditions," said Pelosi, D-Calif.

9. I sincerely hope
that she moves from hinting to action. Right after the election, the talk was "how fast are we going to bring the troops home?", and now, its: "Does Chimpy get his surge, or not?" We cannot let him steal the agenda.

Nancy and the rest of the Congress owe this to our Presidential candidate. We need to pick that person based on what they will do for America, and not on this war. It should be over with (at least as far as our involvement) by the time the debates start.

2. I dearly hope this is true
and to go one better, they should take a good look at the budgeted amount for the troops on the ground. Most of that budget doesn't go for our troops and is highly questionable IMHO.

 Pelosi

5. Truly. Rawther tired of this "hinting" and "suggesting."
I rather like the smack-upside-the-head or the take-him-to-the-woodshed strategy.

This is an unruly child and schoolyard bully who obviously has never been told "NO." I attribute that to some VERY bad parenting. Somebody finally has to say "NO" to this jackass, and with sharp teeth in it.

6. I'm afraid good politics requires her to offer him some space for movement.
Regardless of what happens in Iraq -- whether the US still remains in Iraq for one year or ten -- a certain fraction of the population will believe forever, without any evidence, that the media refused to report the good news from Iraq," that "liberals stabbed our soldiers in the back," and "traitors at home prevented us from winning."

We can expect to hear this myth repeated for the next thirty or forty years by wingnuts, no matter what. So producing a clear record for the disengagement is important.

13. I think this whole Surge thing is a trap.
Call me paranoid. But if funds are denied for the war...
Won't the GOP turn around and blame Democrats for losing the war?
Won't we be accused of abandoning our boys in harms way?

I smell a Rove.

14. Karl Rove is coming into your room to strangle you in your sleep tonight
That's right. Karl Rove is everywhere and all-powerful. In fact, he is waiting outside your house right now, just waiting for his opportunity to destroy you. There is nothing you can do about the imminent doom you face at the hands of Karl Fucking Rove.

Listen: It's totally obvious that Bush is playing this politically. But the Democrats are sorta damned if they do and damned if they don't. Either they feed another 9,000 troops into the meat grinder and get several thousand more killed for no reason or they refuse to do so and be blamed for losing the war. There's just nothing they can do about the way the corporate-owned MSM will play it.

UNLESS, of course, they point out at every opportunity the idiocy of Bush's escalation idea, which I think they're doing a good job of. If I were you, I would start looking at the positive solutions that the Dems are pursuing instead of bitching and moaning about how they're playing into "Republican hands".

That is, until the all-powerful and horrible Karl Rove comes in tonight and chokes you to death. If I don't see you post again, it was nice knowing you.
