Wife of Kidnapped LaPorte Man Files for Bankruptcy
The wife of Jeffrey Ake has started bankruptcy proceedings for his LaPorte County company.

Ake was kidnapped in Iraq nearly two years ago. He was last seen in an April 2005 video that showed him being held at gunpoint.

Bankruptcy filings show Ake's Rolling Prairie water-bottling company, Equipment Express, has more than $1.4 million in outstanding bills.

Liliana Ake says mounting debt has also forced her to put her LaPorte home on the market.

She says with four children and a sick mother to care for, she has had to make a lot of tough decisions.

1. Well, he shouldn't have gone to Iraq, should he have? You go into a combat zone,
you take your chances.

He should have stayed home instead of getting greedy.

4. No. Any civilian who has gone to Iraq voluntarily has done so because they thought:
"I'll make a TON of money!"

They knew the danger.

No sympathy from me, because well, I've gone to a combat zone as a civilian. And paid big for my idiocy. And admitted from that day until this one that it was MY fault for being greedy and oblivious ($1,500 per month was a lot of money in 1972).

6. And he left his family pretty much out in the cold.
It's unfortunate for them. Ake's greed or naive opportunism aside, I don't think they asked to lose everything.

Nobody wants his family to starve. Just for others to realize that starving is a consequence if you family member decides to go into a warzone for profiteering reasons.

Two years ago when that guy left, Americans were being kidnapped right and left in iraq. Surprise surprise. Guess what happened to him.

15. You are not alone
Not only did he think nothing of going to Iraq, he urged others to do the same

Businessman Jeffrey Ake routinely urged entrepreneurs to travel to other countries to pitch their products, once telling a group to think of foreign nations as "U.S. states with cultural nuances thrown in."

But Ake's frequent travels also made him a possible target. He is believed to have been kidnapped by Iraqi insurgents during his second business trip to Iraq in two years.

The idiot ran smack dab into one of those "cultural nuances". Didn't stop to think that cultural nuances in a war zone may be deadly.

3. This one never has made any sense...
Ms. Ake was advised by the FBI not to ask the captors directly for her husband's release. There was talk of ransom money being collected. Then, a few months after the kidnapping, a For Sale sign appeared in the front yard. Soon after that, the family loaded their belongings into a moving van, and were escorted out by law enforcement after dark.

I'm trying to locate some of the articles that appeared in the Indianapolis Star, but so far, all I've been able to find are pay-per-view.

13. huh?
here's a google search

http://www.google.com/search?client=opera&rls=en&q=%22Jeffrey+Ake%22+iraq+water&sourceid=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

but this was the weirdest one:

http://www.annointed.net/Article867.html

Is the town of LaPorte, Indiana being held hostage by the captors of Jeffrey Ake? The ministerial association had scheduled a prayer vigil today, the 15th of April, for 7:00pm. Annointed.net, the World's Largest Prayer Board on the internet, was joining them with thousands of people around the world to lift him up in prayer. "Even though the prayer vigil may have been canceled, they can't stop us from praying" said Jerry Gaffney the organizer of the internet vigil. Gaffney said he understands how the town can be held hostage, but they can't stop us.

The town of LaPorte is still waiting for word about Jeffrey Ake, the American man being held hostage in Iraq. Meanwhile, there are a lot of questions left unanswered concerning Jeffrey Ake, his family, and the cancellation of a prayer vigil that was to be held Friday evening.

Some have asked the questions because it has been reported that the captors may have demanded that no one be contacted and no prayer go up for Jeffrey. One source has said the Muslim captors want the Christians to back off for now so they can get their ransom money.

Executive Director Mike Seitz of the Greater LaPorte Chamber of Commerce refused any further comment other than "A press release is up on the board."

14. I know there are a lot of hits on Google...
But the story in the Indianapolis Star, where they moved out under cover of darkness,
intrigued me the most. Haven't been able to find that one anywhere else.

7. Mercenary wages ...
result in a bad outcome at times. They all knew the risks.

Hopefully this will make future mercenaries think twice.
