U.N. refugee agency says Iraq needs aid By FRANK JORDANS, Associated Press Writer
GENEVA - The U.N. refugee agency made an emergency appeal Monday for $60 million to help the 40,000 to 50,000 Iraqis who flee their homes every month and the 3.7 million who have already been displaced.
Almost half a million Iraqis fled to other parts of the country in 2006 alone, and the total number of people displaced within Iraq by violence and hardship is estimated to reach 2.3 million by the end of this year, UNHCR said.
"Unremitting violence in Iraq will likely mean continued mass internal and external displacement affecting much of the surrounding region," the agency said, adding that this was the biggest refugee crisis in the region in more than 50 years.
"The current exodus is the largest long-term population movement in the Middle East since the displacement of Palestinians following the creation of Israel in 1948," UNHCR said.
