Steelworkers Hail Dupont Backing Off Nerve Agent Waste Treatment

By Doug Cunningham

The United Steelworkers welcomed the decision by Dupont Monday to drop the company's efforts to treat highly toxic waste of the Army nerve agent VX in New Jersey. A campaign against the plan included elected officials, workers, community activists and environmentalists. It was a more than three year campaign that ultimately succeeded in forcing Dupont to abandon the plan. The USW's ongoing Dupont Accountability Project is trying to hold the company accountable for environmental impacts and safety. The union says Duponts record shows the company can't be trusted on its own to be environmentally responsible and to operate its business safely.
