Report of mysterious break-in on presidential library site

Where's Liddy?

By BYRON HARRIS / WFAA-TV

Eviction, mystery and accusations are the latest events in the advance of the proposed Bush presidential library at SMU. Today federal agents marched in this morning with eviction notices in hand. The last two residents of the University Gardens condominiums got orders to leave this morning.

But not before a mysterious break-in last night. Three days ago Gary Getton showed us some of his legal papers in his ongoing fight with SMU over eviction from the condo he rents. Last night, he says his property was burglarized. All that was stolen, he says, were his documents. He's suspicious.

"We own a percentage of the condos and that's why we're staying and fighting pretty much," he said.

Today, Getton got a notice to evict the premises.

EDIT TO CLARIFY:

Some people seem to be missing the point. This guy was in the process of moving out. Three days ago, a news crew was at the condo talking to him. I saw the story. There was footage of him carrying stuff out of the apartment, loading it into his car. He showed the news crew several boxes of documents that he had accumulated in his lawsuit against the university.

LAST NIGHT, the condo, which he is vacating, was broken into. The ONLY thing taken were all the documents from the lawsuit.

Force people out to build something for the boy king.

I can't believe that even rightwingers aren't up in arms about this.

5. Isn't Laura Bush, also?
I never realized that the university was anything much, but apparently it's a prestigious place where rich kids go.

6. Wasn't the eminent domain law passed during *s early years?
Didn't that ruling change it from the government to include corporations or private entities that wanted to tear down something that was in their way so they could build?

10. I wish there was a way to catalog who exactly uses eminent domain.
How many of the people in office who evoke it are Republican, and how many are Democrats. I think what you'd find would be most surprising.

Just a guess.

7. Remember eviction notices was given to
a lot of the people who lived in the prime area where bush wanted to expand his stadium when he was owner of the Rangers. They took the people's property.

8. They haven't even approved the library yet, why evict?
If the library falls through, it will be a great spot for BUSHCO OIL World Headquarters, opening the day he leaves office.

Welcome to DU!!!!!:hi:

I spent one of the longest years of my life reading Remembrances of Things Past. The hardest part was getting past the first 12 chapters about that blasted madeleine cake. :)

17. Why go to the trouble of evicting anyone
when his library only needs to be the size of a phone booth. They could fit it in the courtyard of the condo complex.

18. THE ISSUE IS THE BURGLARY, NOT THE EVICTIONS.
Edited on Thu Jan-11-07 08:28 AM by tanyev
Sorry for yelling, but I did not post this because people are being evicted so big bidness developers can have the land. That is shameful, but it is SOP in these parts.

These condos are not luxury condos. They looked like standard student apartments. The victim of the burglary looked like a stereotypical grad student--long hair in ponytail, beard, t-shirt and jeans. He wasn't carrying out anything exceptionally valuable to his car. Yet, only two days after showing a news crew the boxes of documents he had from his lawsuit against SMU, the condo was broken into and all of those boxes of paper were taken.

Does no one else find this as odd as I do?
