AP: Ney Asks for Alcohol Treatment in Prison
Ney Asks for Alcohol Treatment in Prison

The Associated Press
Wednesday, January 10, 2007; 7:32 PM

WASHINGTON -- Former U.S. Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio, who faces sentencing next
week in the Jack Abramoff bribery investigation, asked a federal judge
Wednesday to note that alcohol addiction contributed to his misconduct.

Ney, who resigned in November shortly after pleading guilty to conspiracy and
making false statements, faces about two years in prison when he is sentenced
Jan. 19. In court documents, his lawyers asked that the six-term lawmaker be
recommended for a prison drug abuse program.

Prosecutors are pushing for about 29 months in prison for Ney, saying he was at
the center of a conspiracy that sold congressional services for cash and gifts.
Ney says his role in the Abramoff scandal was not so extensive and is asking for
less time.

Ney's attorneys didn't ask for a specific sentence in court documents Wednesday.
If Ney completes the prison treatment program, it could reduce his sentence by
as much as a year.

3. Alcohol seems to be the main source of trouble for all of the Rethugs
who get caught.

Maybe Congress should have an "on-site" substance abuse counselor available for our lawmakers.

9. He should get life without parole for continuing to legislate and lie
about his involvement long after we all knew he was guilty and demanded action.

If he had noticed that he was surrounded and immediately surrendered. Had he immediately fessed up and said, "O K guys, you got me. I am a crook and I take responsibility for my crimes, detailed every shady deal he had been into, and thrown himself on the mercy of the court (or off the nearest tall building,) then we could show some mercy and understanding.

If you want forgiveness, dammit, you have to first confess!

Also, I hope they send him to a real prison, instead of one of those dippy, zero security wards, hideout fraternities, so they'd shave his frickin head.

10. This is standard operating procedure for anyone in the federal system with a non-violent offense
Everyone tries to get into this program as it gets you out quicker. Those in the drug program are still incarcerated in a federal prison. this is not some hospital program

Guys like this need, on the day they are released, need to have an unmarked van pull up, taser them, put them in a sack, and take them away to serve out the rest of their sentence in less than hospitable conditions.

Too bad that is not the kind of thing that could be funded.
