Breaking: Dean Chooses Denver (2008 Democratic National Convention)
Edited on Thu Jan-11-07 11:22 AM by jefferson_dem
Breaking: Dean Chooses Denver

The labor pains were hard, but the DNC finally has its 2008 convention city locked down: Denver.

A Democrat who was briefed said that chairman Howard Dean made the final decision yesterday, weeks later than planned. DNC comm. dir. Karen Finney declined to confirm the choice.

Colorado is a marquee states for Democrats, who have, in the past two years, gobbled up the governor's mansion, control of the state legislature, and two congressional seats.

But Denver's bid was shot through with holes from the start. The first technical submission was greeted with dismay by party regulars; revised bids were better. Labor unions threatened to balk unless Denver began to unionize its hotels; others wanted to extract compromises from the DNC and the state about union participation. The DNC worried about whether Denver could raise the $50 million necessary to stage the marquee event for the '08 Dem nominee. Promises by out of state governors to raise millions were greeted skeptically.

<SNIP>

New York City would have been the safe choice, logistically and financially. But it would have been a political nightmare and set Dean apart from his Netroots allies and virtually every strategist, presidential candidate and office holder in the party. But Dean aides have said that he was not prepared to risk holding a convention in a city that was not prepared to handle it.

The western states don't have many electoral votes, but the Dems haven't needed very many more in the last couple of elections.

where he is from. He was born outside Denver! He's the native son there! :) Ask the BG that felt the need to put in their 2004 Boston guide that Kerry was not a native of MA because he was born in Denver.

19. Very good choice for several reasons.
This will emphasize the 50 state strategy by having the convention is a place that hasn't been a Democratic stronghold. It will help us grow our grass roots in the central western region, where I understand we can get a lot of mileage for our efforts. And it doesn't reward Bloomberg.

Denver to host '08 Democratic convention
BETH FOUHY
Associated Press

NEW YORK - The 2008 Democratic presidential convention will be held in Denver,
the Democratic National Committee announced Thursday.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean chose Denver to host the
convention despite several logistical and labor concerns.

"There is no question that the West is important to the future of the Democratic
Party. The recent Democratic gains in the West exemplify the principle that when
we show up and ask for people's votes and talk about what we stand for, we can
win in any part of the country," Dean said in a statement.

Dean's only other choice, New York, had eagerly sought the convention for months,
but its mayor, Michael Bloomberg, said in recent weeks he would not commit the
city to underwrite the convention's costs.

And yes...Kerry was born here. At Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center in Aurora (a suburb of Denver)...where my Grandfather was the head of Microbiology (Orman Weiser).

This is so exciting. Hope I can get back for the gala and hope we have a huge DU meetup.

It's "Western Stock Show" week here in Denver. You should see all the Cowboys.

I'm not particularly crazy about the Stock Show...but it gives you and idea of the type of image having the convention here will give the Dems.

Hardworking...outdoorsy...adventurous...loyal.

We are an interesting breed out here. I don't know who I'm quoting but someone once said that "Coloradoans can smell bullshit from a mile away". And I should add...many of us will call you on it. We are no nonsense.

Unless you're talking about our sports teams...then were uneducated homers. ;) GO NUGGETS!!!

38. Once Again, Dean Proves His Political Genius
Fuck Karl Rove. Howard Dean is the real political genius. He has gone from a little-known governor of a small state to being the one presidential candidate who was 100% correct on all points about Iraq, to the mastermind of the 50-state strategy that won the Congress back for the Dems, to now giving the 2008 Dem convention a new home in a city that has never hosted a convention and will be excited to be in the national spotlight for two weeks.

Dean has accomplished all of this without using divise issues and pitting groups of Americans against each other. He's well on his way of building a new Dem coalition based on real issues. He has the potential of building another New Deal voting bloc that can make the Dems the majority party for years to come.

Once again, Fuck Karl Rove.
