Texas Congressman Seeks Presidency

HOUSTON -- Rep. Ron Paul, the iconoclastic, nine-term lawmaker from southeast Texas, took the first step Thursday toward a second, quixotic presidential bid _ this time as a Republican.

Paul filed papers in Texas to create a presidential exploratory committee that will allow him to raise money. In 1988, Paul was the Libertarian nominee for president and received more than 400,000 votes.

He was one of a handful of Republicans to vote in 2002 against giving President Bush the authority to use military force in Iraq, contending that only Congress had the power to declare war. At times, he has voted against funds for the military.

Paul bills himself as "The Taxpayers' Best Friend," and is routinely ranked either first or second in the House by the National Taxpayers Union, a national group advocating low taxes and limited government.

Truth be told, though, if I were a Libertarian I would vote for Ron Paul in a heartbeat. And I'm looking forward to hearing him speak his mind during the debates. :)

But he is our nutcase. I believe he started out as an ob-gyn so that might explain some things...But he always remembers his district and he really is a straight shooter. Somethings he'll side with Dem's sometimes he sides with GOP, but he always votes his mind.

the same room. If you think Dem debates have been too protected and mainstream that is nothing to the vast editing of real issues done by the GOP by their very nature. As with Nader vast issues and controversies will be tossed like burning gasoline onto the beauty pageant and the first word of Paul will be the match. At the least it would destroy their debates.

Unlike the Dems there will be no game, drama or agony or embarrassment. he simply will be excluded and silenced and kept away from any shared podium, more so than even Pete McCloskey who challenged Nixon or Buchanan who challenged Bush I, because he would devastate weak contenders not seated powers.

I'm going to enjoy the Republican primary debates. Fortunately (l/L)ibertarians from all over the country will continue to support him and those folks have deep pockets.

As a libertarian Dem, I value his contributions to the debate on many issues including the war and fiscal responsibility.
