UK 'must continue to fight wars' {major Blair speech}
"Tony Blair has said his foreign policy is "controversial" but his approach of military intervention must continue after he has stepped down.

In a major speech, he said the "war on terror" may last a generation but to retreat would be a "catastrophe".

And Britain must be ready to fight wars as well as keep the peace.

He also admitted the army was doing more overseas than planned and there were "real problems" with accommodation for military families."

1. If you want to hear evil preached
here it is. According to Bliar war is good, peacekeeping the second rank option for impotent nations. So now we know what he means by western values - indeed, Christian values. Hundreds of thousands of civilians killed for some supposedly superior way of life which imposes itself through violence.

10. He's supposed to go in May anyway
This is the quacking of a lame duck. He has a delusional idea that he is going to have a great place in history, but he isn't.

IMO he's not racist as such- he's imperialist. He would have loved to be in charge 100 years ago, ruling a British Empire on which the sun never set. He thinks he knows best, for Britain and for everywhere else.

11. Yep, he's leaving office this year
He may be really badly wrong on Iraq, but it would be of more interest if this were from the mouth of Gordon Brown.

12. He must be hoping no-one actually reads the speech
because it's full of shit, even by his own standards.

full speech

He's trying to say why "September 11 2001 changed everything". So he says:

What we face is not a criminal conspiracy or even a fanatical but fringe terrorist organisation. We face something more akin to revolutionary Communism in its early and most militant phase. It is global. It has a narrative about the world and Islam's place within it that has a reach into most Muslim societies and countries. It adherents may be limited. Its sympathisers are not. It has states or at least parts of the governing apparatus of states that give it succour.

But the people that British troops are fighting in Iraq have nothing to do with a 'global' organisation. They're Shia Muslims, jockeying for power in Iraq. If they came up against al Qaeda, they'd be mutual enemies - just as Saddam was.

The comparison to 'revolutionary Communism' is interesting. Following it through, it seems Blair worries that al Qaeda will take over Iraq - as communism took over Russia. So that means someone was responsible for starting a war which weakened a state until it could be taken over. That would seem to make the USA the new Austria, who, after a terrorist attack on them, blamed a small country and invaded it, and the war then grew into a larger one. And the UK would then be their principal ally - which would make it Germany. Which makes Blair the Kaiser.
