Comet McNaught, the brightest comet to appear in our skies in more than 30 years, has been putting on a spectacular show in the eastern sky at dawn and the western sky at dusk this week.

And this weekend it might become even more brilliant.

Ironically, the comet has also been a source of frustration for many skywatchers, because of its very low altitude. More often than not, the comet has been hidden either by clouds near the horizon, or nearby trees or buildings. For this reason, even some veteran observers have been stymied in their efforts to catch a glimpse of it.

But Comet McNaught is now also visible to armchair astronomers via images posted to the Internet from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory spacecraft. And beginning next week, it will head rapidly south and likely become a spectacle for skywatchers in the Southern Hemisphere

6. I tried seeing it from Minnepolis tonight...
It was 5:08 pm local, and I think I was too late. There was a tree in the area below Venus where it should have been, but I even checked with binoculars. Missed it tonight. Last night was cloudy. It's going below zero for the next few days, maybe it will stay clear.

Anyone seen it tonight?

13. I tried this morning in St. Paul, but no luck
It was very close to actual sunrise when I gave up and I didn't see anything. Then again, the police officer checking to see if my car had stalled due to the cold didn't make me want to stick around much longer. There was only one bank of clouds towards the east, so I'm disappointed that I didn't see it.

10. I saw it last night.
Right at dusk. It was really something. I only wish it would have been much higher up in the sky so that I could see it in the dark, that would have been an amazing site.

As it was, it still beautiful.

12. One benefit of living in Montana...
is, due truly to a big sky, to be able see the comet in the unpolluted western sky right after sunset. Striking.
