7. I think in a tsunami, it's not so much the wave height
as the volume of water behind it. It's not like a regular breaker that hits, dissipates, and recedes.

23. That's the way I understand it too...
When it hits land, it doesn't dissipate...It picks up debris in its path and continues on.
Not to be messed with!

6. Maybe 3 feet on average?
But if the slope of the sea bottom is just right, that can be magnified many times as it hits the shore.

8. Well yes - the waves are so long out in the open ocean - that 3 feet can
swell up. But it's probably just a few inches out in the open ocean and could swell to 3 ft on shore. If it's high tide that could cause some problems.

9. Never scoff at a 3 foot tsunami
Seems small, but don't think of it as a 3-foot wave. Think of it as a sudden rise in sea-level by 3-feet. Visualize those 2 to 3-foot waves as suddenly 5-6 feet. It's not the kind of wave that kills thousandsm but it can be dangerous in harbors and beaches.

15. USGS says 7.7
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/us2007xmae.php

But the magnitude of these large events are often changed after a few days study. Northridge was originally called a 7.0 by news sources, then modified to 6.7 later that week.

And that has a big impact on the stated magnitude. Still, given the events of two years ago, anything is possible.

Gotcha in my prayers that it doesn't cause the waves, you know you are in my prayers.

59. Hey, merh. That's the one thing I haven't figured out yet.
With warning, I can cage them, slap the cages on a handtruck and trot up about 7 blocks and we'd be okay. I even have all the gear right here at hand next to a backpack with basics in it.

Without warning, not so good. But at least, we've passed the stage where they all hiss at the puppy. Now they just sneer. lol

32. Our Tsunami Warning System just went off here in Alaska too...
Edited on Sat Jan-13-07 12:15 AM by larissa
I thought the guy on the alert said the (((earthquake))) was somewhere near Japan?, but my kid has her computer game on so freakin' LOUD and I didn't hear everything they said...

I was sitting here reading DU and listening to a hockey game on the radio when all of a sudden, that obnoxious =MEEP, MEEP, MEEP, MEEP= of the state alert system went off..

I'm sure we'll hear an update soon..

Shame on you for not listening to our Alaska Aces beating the Victoria BC team..

(Uh oh.. I probably just jinxed the Aces)

I will put an update on here if the Alaska Warning System sets off another alert.

40. We are getting those warnings here in northern CA too

expected to hit us at 04:xxx (depending on where you live, the minutes are different) this morning.

If they have tsunami arrival times pinpointed (they are saying for example, 04:41 for Charleston, OR)... that means the mid ocean detection system (buoys) have already registered a tsunami passing them...

Now updating to just after 05:00 PST for San Francisco.

48. They said on Channel 9 in LA that
it would reach Alaska at 1 am PST before Hawaii an hour later. There has been a reduction of the sea level of 4 inches, didn't catch where as the word tsunami caught my attention. The last time a warning came in for southern California coasts we got a few mere minutes warning to get to higher ground. Hope it is not bad. It was mentioned that it was deep in the Ocean where the epicenter was. The Ring of Fire...

51. There was an 8.3 on that fault recently -- after nothing major in years
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/us2007xmae.php#summary

Tectonic Summary

The Kuril Islands earthquake of January 13, 2007, occurred as normal-faulting in the Pacific plate near the boundary between the Pacific plate and the Okhotsk plate. In the region of the earthquake's epicenter, the Pacific plate moves northwest with respect to the Okhotsk plate with a velocity of about 90 mm/year. The Pacific plate subducts beneath the Okhotsk plate at the Kuril Trench and becomes progressively deeper to the northwest, remaining seismically active to a depth of 680 km. The January 13 earthquake occurred approximately 95 km ESE of an M8.3 earthquake that occurred on November 15, 2006. The November 15 earthquake is the largest earthquake to have occurred in the central Kuril Islands since the early 20th century. A central Kuril Islands earthquake in 1915 is estimated to have had a magnitude of about 8. The central Kuril Islands commonly experiences one or more shocks of magnitude 6 or greater in a decade. To the southwest, the southern Kuril Islands chain experienced a magnitude 8.5 earthquake in 1963. To the northeast, a magnitude 9 earthquake occurred offshore of Kamchatka in 1952.

53. As i said on another thread
ABC took up the BBC feed, a meter high wave expected in Hokaido and we have a tsunami

Bears repeating, stay away from the coastline if you live in any of the affected areas, even only on advisories

56. Small tsunami hits Japan
http://today.reuters.co.uk/news/articlenews.aspx?type=UKNews1&storyID=2007-01-13T070048Z_01_SP199617_RTRUKOC_0_UK-JAPAN-TSUNAMI.xml&WTmodLoc=HP-C1-TopStories-4
A small tsunami wave hit Japan's northernmost island on Saturday after a powerful north Pacific earthquake prompted tsunami warnings for northern Japan, Russia and a wide swathe of Japan's Pacific coast.

A tsunami watch was also issued for a wide area of the Pacific, including Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines and Hawaii by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii, but there were no reports of injury or damage.

A 10-cm (4-inch) wave was reported at Nemuro, on Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido, a little after 3 p.m. local (6 a.m.), NHK public television said. Officials said several harbour waters had drawn back slightly in what could be a precursor to a wave.

There were no reports of injury or damage, or more significant waves, as of 3:45 p.m., but officials warned that larger waves could still arrive and evacuation advisories were issued for thousands of households....(more@link)
