Dingell touts climate laws (asks Gore to testify before Congress on global warming)

House energy panel chair seeks Gore's help in pushing rules by '08 to address global warming.

DETROIT -- The powerful new chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee said he hoped to enact legislation on climate change by 2008 and formally invited former Vice President Al Gore to testify.

In a sign of growing momentum in Congress to do something about global warming, U.S. Rep. John Dingell, D-Dearborn, and Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Va., chairman of the subcommittee on energy and air quality, said in a letter obtained by The News they hope to enact climate change legislation soon.

In their letter to Gore, a former member of the House committee, the congressmen said his testimony would be beneficial as "we launch an in-depth examination of climate change that we hope will lead to the enactment of legislation in the 110th Congress." Dingell also praised "An Inconvenient Truth," Gore's movie on global warming. He said Gore's "personal efforts to raise the profile of this issue have helped to bring it to the attention of the American public."

3. Oh, MAN, that's for sure! To address the crisis of climate change
across the globe, first we had to have climate change in Washington DC. Thank God THAT'S happened! IT does give me hope!

4. This is good news.
I'm glad the Democrats are going to follow through on this.

I don't want to be pessimistic here, but I have to say I'm afraid no matter what we do it will be too little, too late. Granted, it may mitigate and slow the changes that are now already underway, and maybe our grandchildren's grandchildren will not be as hurt by our ways because of what happens now that the Democrats are in charge, but Reagan should have followed Carter's lead instead of coming in and saving the Americans from whatever it was he saved us from.

There's an Environment/Energy forum here on DU that really delves into the topic of Global Climate Change - you might want to check it out.

6. Dingell has long fought efforts to force automakers to dramatically increase fuel efficiency
Careful! This looks like a non-solution solution -- we'll study the problem, and then we'll take a tiny step and hope people are paying too close attention...

Many in Congress want to force automakers to dramatically increase the fuel efficiency of their vehicles through increased corporate average fuel efficiency standards. Dingell has long fought those efforts.

A Senate committee has said it plans to call Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who this week called on fuel companies to reduce the carbon content of passenger vehicle fuels 10 percent by 2020.

Woo-hoo! Reduce carbon content of fuels 10% by 2020! Wow!

:sarcasm:
