Clinton doubts Iraqis can pacify Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq - U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton expressed doubt Saturday that Iraq's government would follow through with its promises to secure Baghdad as she met with top Iraqi officials and American commanders.

It was the third trip to Iraq for Clinton, a Democrat from New York who is considering running for president, and comes amid opposition from the Democratic-controlled Congress to President Bush's plans to send in 21,500 more troops to stop the rampant violence.

"I don't know that the American people or the Congress at this point believe this mission can work," she told ABC News in Baghdad. "And in the absence of a commitment that is backed up by actions from the Iraqi government, why should we believe it?"

............

"This is my third trip here. I've seen the violence and security problems increase, not decrease," she said, calling on Bush to start withdrawing U.S. troops.

"That would really demonstrate to the Iraqis that we don't have an open-ended commitment," she said. "We are not going to be here providing protection for their leaders, which we do. We are not going to be here standing by and trying to be called in from time to time as they see fit. That is not in the cards."

1. she is skeptical says here:
The three, all members of armed services committees, also met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

"I'm skeptical that the Iraqi government will do what they have promised to do, and that I think is the concern of all of us who have heard this before," she said, referring to earlier security efforts that have failed to stop the sectarian attacks that have been increasing since the Feb. 22 bombing of a Shiite shrine in Samarra.

3. I doubt CLinton
can pacify liberals enough to win the primary she is obviously positioning herself for. Nice try though Hillary. Soory, but if I am not in congress and knew it was stupid to go into Iraq than she is obviously too stupid to be in the position she is in now. Funny that all us "commoners" on DU knew more than her. Doesn't really instill too much confidence in her or her "third way". I have a "fourth way" for her, right back to Arkansas.

6. Nope
I am not a Hillary hater and hold it against them all. Not just Hillary. Sure, I am happy they are finally listening to us, but they should have done that 3 years ago. Too little to late Hillary, I thought you would be better than this.

who are anti-colonialist and against economic strangulation of other nations. I like Kucinich and hope Feingold will re-consider. I would also support an independant/socialist run by Bernie Sanders.

11. No Worries...AK..
The Hillary detractors are not in command of the facts. Their bloviating posts evidence their scripted, stunted, mantra geared to propagating lies compounded with misleading facts.

When Hillary returns from the ME, the Iraq War and Bush's prospects of attacking Iran will be the centerpiece of her
campaign. The detractors will be forced to listen to her recommendations of bringing the troops home and pulling out of the ME. And if they still respond with constipated facts, I'm sure, Hillary, being the kind person she is, will recommend her detractors consider a suppository.

8. I don't think either Clinton has any credibility on Iraq.
Bill bombed the sh*t out of the place for eight years with CIA encouragement and Hillary has basically played along with the scrpt.

9. I agree
and obviously daddy Bush and Clinton get along just fine so there can't be too many disagreements on the foreign policy front. The only difference is on how many table scraps they think they need to throw to workers in this country.

12. Wow - how did we get from Hill late on Iraq to table scraps for workers?
She has been a fierce progressive - as most converts from Goldwater republicanism are.

If you need details, any RW site has list of the evil, liberal positions taken by Hillary that were not approved by corporations and the GOP.

If it is the smart tough women fear, I understand it - 'cause I married one and I agree that there is much to fear! (and love)!
