Cover-up is focus of CIA leak trial

By Andy Sullivan
Sun Jan 14, 1:35 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The only criminal trial to result from a three-year investigation of government leaks begins on Tuesday and, as in previous Washington scandals, prosecutors will focus on the cover-up, not the crime.

Rather than being charged with disclosing the identity of a clandestine CIA officer, former White House official Lewis "Scooter" Libby is accused of lying to investigators.

Libby was forced to resign as chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney once the charges were lodged.

In that respect, the affair is like other investigations by special prosecutors, including the Watergate and Monica Lewinsky scandals, legal experts said. Still, it has been far less expensive, costing just $1.4 million through March 2006.

1. You know if the Libby trial could bring Cheney down...
which I think is real possibility...the whole house of cards could fold in upon itself...

3. Am I going nuts, or have the war profiteering corporate news monopoly
reporters ceased to be able to write a coherent English sentence. It's like they've listened to Bush too much, or to Bushite bosses and editors.

"Rather than being charged..." ??? Who said he should be charged for outing Plame/Brewster-Jennings? Fitz never said that. I don't think there is anybody who doesn't know it was Cheney and/or Rumsfeld plus Bush. In any case, what this ding-head MEANS is that no one has been charged yet for the outings.

"In that respect...' --in what respect? How is this "affair" anything like the Lewinsky "affair"? He'd just said Libby resigned. Clinton didn't resign. So what is the relationship between that and "in this respect"?

Jeez, you can't even understand what they're saying any more. Ed said dull it down. Make it seem like "other investigations." Ho-hum. Rather than being charged....In that respect....

:nuke:
