French President Jacques Chirac wants to send a senior envoy to Iran to discuss the situation in Lebanon, where the government faces a standoff with the Iranian-backed opposition, Le Monde newspaper said on Tuesday.
The move would come during a period of tension between Iran and the United States over Tehran's role in Iraq and its disputed nuclear programme and follows a decision by the United Nations to impose sanctions on Iran over its disputed nuclear programme.
Chirac, approaching the end of his term as president, is one of the strongest Western supporters of Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, whose government has been locked in crisis with the opposition, led by the Iranian-backed group, Hezbollah.
He has organised a conference in Paris later this month to coordinate international aid and reconstruction for Lebanon after last year's conflict with Israel.
