Train derails, catches fire near Louisville
http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/01/16/train.fire/index.html

BROOKS, Kentucky (CNN) -- A train derailed Tuesday morning and erupted in flames just south of Louisville, Kentucky, the Bullitt County Sheriff's Department said.

Flames lit the dark morning sky, sending black smoke billowing into the air, while orange flames lined the railroad track for hundreds of yards alongside the derailment.

It is not clear what the train was carrying, but several tanker cars were stacked up beside each other perpendicular to the tracks, all ablaze.

Breaking on CNN. Big ass fire south of Louisville

This one today looks pretty bad. They are evacuating the area and may have to do the hazmat thing. Whatever that would be.

5. That's kind of odd then
My son and grandbaby live right next to the tracks here in Biloxi. I worry about this kind of thing happening near them. It scares me everytime a train roars by.

“We are preparing to shut down 65 both north and south, because there’s a cloud going across the highway,” said Lt. David Lee of the Kentucky State Police.

He said he didn’t know “what the chemical is” inside the cars, but said it is "an inhalation hazard."

Hillview Mayor Jim Eadens said nobody in Hillview or Brooks is being evacuated right now.

...

An estimated 400 children at Brooks Elementary were being transported to Hebron Middle School several miles away to keep them out of harm’s way.

17. CNN says that CSX knew from the start what was on the train, but didn't tell the firemen.
They spent two hours trying to put out the fire, before they found out what was actually burning.

Now, they've withdrawn, to let the fire burn itself out.

22. still burning this am : The chemicals released were cyclohexane, methyl ethyl ketone, butadiene...
The chemicals released when 12 of the train cars derailed were cyclohexane, methyl ethyl ketone, butadiene and alcohol, said Gary Sease, a CSX spokesman.

"These substances themselves are pretty toxic, but when they burn they break down a whole lot," said Jeremey Urekew, a spokesman for Bullitt County Emergency Management. "This fire is going to burn itself out."

Two other cars were carrying hazardous materials that could pose an environmental threat, but they were not near the fire. The train — with four locomotives and 80 cars — was headed to Louisville from Birmingham, Ala.
