Dems Wrap 'Six for '06' With Vote on Energy Bill

Jan. 18, 2007 — When the House of Representatives votes on an energy bill this afternoon, it will complete its "first 100 hours" of legislative work. If the bill — which would roll back oil subsidies and invest the money into alternative energy programs — passes, it will mark the sixth of six bills House Democrats have promised to send to the Senate.

Overshadowed by the Troop Surge
Much of the media coverage of the legislative action by the new Democratic House has been overshadowed by President Bush's plan for an escalation or surge in U.S. troops sent to Iraq and the congressional reaction to that proposal. But notably, not only have House Democrats managed to pass their "Six for '06" measures, they have done so with bipartisan majorities.

'Creative Clock-Keeping?'
Nor does the bipartisan voting indicate GOP happiness. Republicans have accused Democrats of what Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., referred to in a speech as "creative clock-keeping." As of this morning, nine days after the 100 hours began, only 34 official hours have passed on Pelosi's clock. And though Democrats were gaveled into control on Jan. 4, it wasn't until five days later that the clock started, after other matters involving ethics and lobbying reform had been voted upon.


Republicans have also objected to the Democrats' refusal to allow the minority party the ability to offer competing bills.


"Very rarely are the six items that we're going to move discussed as openly and as extensively as these items have been discussed," he (Hoyer)said. "We think that they offered their alternatives in the election. Their alternatives in many respects were 'no.'"

You know what? They should "get over it" (as they used to love to say) and STFU or get down to business and work to pass some meaningful legislation.

BTW, Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn, is one of the whiniest Repukes in the house. She is both moranic and annoying.

Whenever I see her, I turn off the sound. She ranks right up there with Melanie Morgan and Ann Coultergeist as the most annoying Repuke Stepfordwife.

I'm a fellow Southerner and I have to say that she is incredibly annoying and stupid. I know lots of women like her, the only difference being that they are stay at home, soccer moms living in the wealthy white suburbs of NE Georgia. I grew up in Chattanooga and there are so many women just like her there.

That annoying young Republican representative from western NC is always on TV too. His name is Patrick McHenry or something like that. He's the youngest congresscritter in the house.

Jack Kingston from Savannah, GA is also in the top five of my list of most annoying congressmen.

the one who infamously was presiding over the House when he called the vote for the "aye"s when OBVIOUSLY there were more who voiced opposition. Can't think of his name but he's been elevated to leadership so I'm sure we're going to be suffering through a lot more of him, too ...

I think that the Repub leadership puts these young newbie congresscritters out there to do their whining and dirty work for them. :grr:

I have a Republican rep now that the GOP redistricted my Democratic congressman, John Barrow, out of my district. He now represents Savvanah, GA and not Athens. I am now represented by the loathsome and quite ill (lung transplant a while back and now cancer of some sort) Charlie Norwood, a former dentist from Augusta, GA. The GOP couldn't stand to have Athens-Clarke County (a blue island in red GA) represented by a Democrat. :(
