Errant airliner on LA runway forces Delta pilot to abort landing

By: Associated Press -

LOS ANGELES -- A Delta Air Lines jet on final approach to Los Angeles International Airport was forced to veer away a half-mile before touchdown because an Aeromexico aircraft pulled onto the runway, authorities said Thursday.

The Delta pilot pulled up and circled around while the Aeromexico jetliner took off, said Michael Foote, local president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor confirmed the incident and said it was "classified preliminarily as a pilot error." He wouldn't classify the severity of the incident, which was being investigated.

1. Good on everyone for avoiding a collision!
The fact is, these things happen no matter how many precautions you take. I'm glad they've reported it and the people who made the corrections should be recognized.

I've been in a plane that couldn't land in LA because of errant runway traffic. It's very scary.

2. TOGA: Take Off Go Around
I've been in a jet that did this. This is actually relatively common. The proximity of the two jets is what is remarkable. "Missed approaches" are nothing really special. Stuff happens at busy (and not-so-busy) airports. Thank heavens the Delta crew TOGA'ed in time.

5. TOGA at that elevation and distance from touchdown is
scary to me.

I have to admit, every landing at LAX is scary to me. This year after Christmas when we came in there were EXTREMELY heavy, gusting crosswinds that got especially bad the last 30 seconds. I was afraid they were going to flip us over and into the Lot C parking.

4. Happened to me at SJO -after- we crossed 880 on final approach
Now THAT was a quick climb out and circle (with appropriate soiling of shorts by all involved)
