For 14 Long Hours, Keeping the Secret

By Mike Allen and Bradley Graham
Washington Post Staff Writers
Monday, December 15, 2003; Page A01

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld spoke guardedly when he called President Bush at Camp David at 3:15 p.m. Saturday, with the bombshell that Saddam Hussein apparently was in custody after a fruitless eight-month search that had tormented the White House.

Bush returned from Camp David by helicopter, as previously planned, arriving at the White House at 7:20. Cheney also returned to Washington and went to a holiday party at Rumsfeld's house along with other administration officials.

At the party, Tim Russert of NBC News told Tenet he had had a dream the night before that the United States had captured Hussein. "Happy holidays, Tim," Tenet replied, according to Russert's on-air account yesterday morning.

Rumsfeld was less cagey when he arrived at a Christmas party at the home of Air Force Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Rumsfeld swept past a receiving line of guests waiting to greet Myers and his wife, Mary Jo Myers, and said he needed a "secure phone," which he used to place a call to a top aide about the Hussein situation.

1. If they keep embellishing this story ...
... it's gonna turn into Jessica Lynch The Sequel. Don't they know when to stop?

2. Heh
Good. Let that become the story. The embellishments are coming fast and furious, as expected. It's these little things that will turn people off.

Basically, if Bush is going to lie about a turkey dinner, what else will he lie about? This is what gets the average person out there suspicious.

6. The story is already so laughable
As is their entire fabrication about Sadaam bricking himself into a cave like a field mouse.

Soon we will learn
that he was in custody since thanksgiving when bush smelled him out and then went down the hole himself and pulled him out by the short hairs. But being the humble leader he is, he wanted to let the soldiers get the credit.

7. Careful now people.
If we don't show our due appreciation and awe about this event, our unpatriotic statements will be splashed across the news. Let us take a moment and drop to our knees and thank God that we have the greatest leaders in the history of the free world.

Half of Hollywood claimed to have been invited over to Sharon Tate's house that night, but bowed out for one reason or another.

15. Yeah, what are all these guys doing partying with Rumsfeld?
How can you have objective reporting and analysis when you are whooping it up with them? I wouldn't be surprised if some these journalists were being bribbed, or bought off with lavish gifts by this administration to not report the real news, making them comfortable and complacent.

No wonder our media is such piss poor shape.

16. The real story is how cozy Russert is with the Bush regime
and this also shows the poisoned atmosphere that the Beltway is. If you want access you need to be friendly to the regime. But to be friendly to the regime means that one has to act as a propagandist and not a journalist. Our media whores prefer the access, so that they can be on TV, to being journalists and find themselves sitting at home.

20. Politician/Journalist' fraternization is nothing new...
Edited on Mon Dec-15-03 10:28 AM by alg0912
David Brinkley was buddies with Bobby Kennedy, Hugh Sidey & Henry Luce (Time Magazine) were very close to JFK. And it's no secret that Mike Wallace is good friends with Nancy Reagan. Of course, this doesn't make such fraternization acceptable, but I offer it up for perspective...

However, it does confirm what we've known all along about Potatohead - that he's a biased Repug enabler...

17. imagine Cheney stuffing his fat face at the party
Gleaming with eggnog and mustard from pigs in blankets dripping from the corner of his mouth and spinach from phylo wrapped beggars purses stuck between his teeth!

All the while grinning like a sick executioner.

22. Although peeing his pants upon hearing the news was a dead giveaway
with many party go-ers humming a collective hmmmm, as they all wondered what could have caused Rummy to pee his pants.

23. Gone are the days of friendship with Saddam
when the US, UK and Israel were shipping arms to Baghdad and offering satellite imagery and other war products to Saddam during Reagan/Bush when this photo of Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam was taken.

Get ready for a Third Reich style election year show trial and hysteria in the political world known as realpolitik.

All the blood is on Bush though, he lied and we've come to this pathetic point in history. He should be locked up after thrown out of office {that he stole in 2000} IMHO as a citizen.
