WASHINGTON — American civilization eventually will collapse if government doesn't do a better job assimilating immigrants into society, possible GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said Wednesday as he urged Congress to enshrine English as the nation's official language.

"If you are pro-immigration to America, you should be pro-assimilation into English as the common language because in fact your children and grandchildren will have a dramatically better future if they are part of the common commercial civilization," Gingrich said.

He spoke at a news conference organized by ProEnglish, a Virginia-based group pushing for governments across the country to adopt official-English laws.

I have a friend who speaks English as a second language and she was asking me why I don't correct her when she makes grammatical mistakes. I told her, hey, my English is far from perfect, it's not my place to correct you.

23. He can't win on the real issues so he is digging up an old one. My

grandparents were loyal Americans and sent a son to fight in WWII but they were forbidden to speak German in their homes. (That son was used in the chemical warfare division going behind the enemy lines because he could speak fluent German.) Because of that many of us who have German ancestory have lost our second language. When will we ever learn that we cannot judge whole populations by the color of their skin or their religious beleifs?

Steve King of Iowa should be ashamed of himself - my family are mostly from Iowa - you know the ones who cannot speak German anymore.
