Iran reportedly moving on uranium enrichment
U.N. officials say 3,000 centrifuges to be installed starting next month

DAVOS, Switzerland - Iran plans to start installing thousands of centrifuges in an underground facility next month, U.N. officials said Friday, paving the way to large-scale uranium enrichment, a potential way of making nuclear weapons.

The officials, who demanded anonymity because the information was confidential, emphasized that Iranian officials had not officially said the country would embark on the assembly of what will initially be 3,000 centrifuges at Natanz.

But they said senior officials have informally told the International Atomic Energy Agency the work would start next month.

5. And who can blame them. Cheney only invades NON-nuclear nations
ANY leader worth their salt would be looking to get nukes to protect their people from the rogue state, the US under Cheney.

Anybody have a way to check Cheney's most secret investments? Thinking he probably has $$ on the hardware of building better bombs. His whole agenda is about making $$ for somebody.

it was in a report by our own Bush administration NSC report in 2005 and if some added that they could chop off a few years from the ten by being able to buy the right 'parts' - then how did they get to this point. WAS THE ANON PERSON _ JOHN BOLTON? BS BS BS

18. Why aren't our Congressional leaders asking for a timetable - there
has only been a little blip from one or two leaders about not going into Iran until they are consulted. WHERE ARE OUR LEADERS? ARE THEY GOING TO ALLOW THIS? THEY CAN STOP THIS IF THEY WANT TO.

Saudi Arabia and Israel, our masters, could stop this if they wanted to.

23. So what if true?
Of course all countries are thinking more keenly about their capacity for self-defense. The ability to wreak "mass destruction" is indeed the surest protection of national integrity - Bush has taught that lesson well.

28. 3000 plays like so many but is it really a lot?
Edited on Fri Jan-26-07 11:05 PM by 0rganism
Apparently not, because the "confidential sources" predict

"Iran ultimately plans to expand its enrichment program to 54,000 centrifuges, which spin uranium gas into enriched material to produce nuclear fuel. That would give it the capacity to produce dozens of nuclear warheads a year, if it chose to develop weapons."

Dozens of warheads per year! Is that a lot? Is that more or less than Israel makes? What about India? or Pakistan? or China? And what's the yield of these theoretical warheads? 10 kiloTons? 100kT? 1MT? 10MT? What if they choose to stick 'em all together into one GIGANTIC warhead and shoot it into the center of the earth? Should we be afraid?

Based on an estimate of 36 Standard News Headline Warhead Production Units per year for 54k centrifuges, I'd say their Vastly Terrifying Aresenal of 3000 centrifuges is good for about... 2 warheads per year. Of course, that's all assuming the credulous folks at MSNBC aren't just yanking the panic chain...

32. One A Year
On 12 November 2006 Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said Iran intended to install 3,000 uranium enrichment centrifuges by March 2007. Hosseini said Iran was doing all the work to install the centrifuges under control of the UN nuclear watchdog, adding that two cascades of 164 centrifuges were already in operation in the country. The 3,000 uranium enrichment centrifuges would give Iran the capability of producing enough Highly Enriched Uranium for about one atomic bomb annually.

If every works right, that is.

And I would imagine the 'weapon' would be along the lines of 'Little Boy'.

33. Is this anything new? Iran admits, even boasts, about the 3,000 centrifuge cascade.
Iran said that the cascade would be up and running by the end of 2006.
The dispute is what are Iran's intentions with its new capability.
The cascade will be a milestone, when they get it working, but they
still have work to do before they master the nuclear fuel cycle.
It would still take Iran several years to enrich enough nuclear fuel
to make a bomb. The real concern is whether Iran is trying to scale
up to a much bigger cascade.

35. And couldn't they be doing this
...for civilian nuclear reactors, as they claim? Don't those use enriched uranium too?

I'm not saying I believe Iran's intent is innocent. We don't know. But the IAEA is in there, and after the Iraq aluminum tube fiasco I trust their analysis of what's going on before I'd ever trust our own government.

34. Haven't we seen this story before???
Drip, drip, drip, same kind of "scare-the-bejesus-out-of-'em" reports, next thing you know there's war. He's going to do it. He's going to get us into a war with Iran. Syria will hop in and there will be plenty of American targets for them in between. Is this Bush's "fight 'em over there so we don't fight 'em here" strategy? Keep putting our young, American men and woman in the center as targets?
