Ivins hospitalized in ongoing battle with cancer

AUSTIN, Texas Liberal Texas newspaper columnist Molly Ivins has been hospitalized in her ongoing battle with breast cancer.

Ivins assistant Betsy Moon says her boss may be able to go home Monday. She adds that those close to Ivins are "not sure what's going to happen, but she's very sick."

The 62-year-old columnist had taken a break from her syndicated column, but resumed writing earlier this month. Her most recent column appeared two weeks ago, when Ivins urged readers to stand against President Bush's plan to send more troops to Iraq.

In the January Eleventh column, Ivins wrote -- quote -- "We are the people who run this country. We are the deciders. And every single day, every single one of us needs to step outside and take some action to help stop this war." She added -- "We need people in the streets, banging pots and pans and demanding, 'Stop it, now!'"...

Stand Up Against the Surge

The purpose of this old-fashioned newspaper crusade to stop the war is not to make George W. Bush look like the dumbest president ever. People have done dumber things. What were they thinking when they bought into the Bay of Pigs fiasco? How dumb was the Egypt-Suez war? How massively stupid was the entire war in Vietnam? Even at that, the challenge with this misbegotten adventure is that WE simply cannot let it continue.

It is not a matter of whether we will lose or we are losing. We have lost. Gen. John P. Abizaid, until recently the senior commander in the Middle East, insists that the answer to our problems there is not military. "You have to internationalize the problem. You have to attack it diplomatically, geo-strategically," he said.

His assessment is supported by Gen. George W. Casey Jr., the senior American commander in Iraq, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who only recommend releasing forces with a clear definition of the goals for the additional troops.

Bush's call for a "surge" or "escalation" also goes against the Iraq Study Group. Talk is that the White House has planned to do anything but what the group suggested after months of investigation and proposals based on much broader strategic implications...

57. And donate to the Texas Observer while you're at it.

There's room for a comment and to give the name of the person in whose honor you're donating. Molly Ivins is a treasure, and it's a bit of comfort to help out the organization to which she's devoted so much of her life.

15. in the January, '07 issue of
The Progressive (where Ivins has a final page column) in Editors Note 'New Year's Wishes', Matthew Rothschild wrote: "...I'm concerned, immediately now, with the health of Molly Ivins, who has been wrestling with the intractable foe of cancer. Molly, who has been an indelible part of this magazine-and the progressive movement-for the last twenty years. Molly, who never has ceased to remind us to keep on laughing. Molly, who makes us laugh again with her column this month. Molly, hang in there! (I'll be happy to forward your cards and letters to her.)

22. I love Molly Ivins.
She's made me think and laugh. She's brought me information and she's challenged me. She let me know I wasn't the only one out there, and she let me know it in a clear and well defined voice which takes for granted that most everyone is ultimately interested in the truth, and in doing the right thing.

I don't know what else to say at this point.

I love Molly.

Prayer for Healing
Mother, sing me a song
That will ease my pain,
Mend broken bones,
Bring wholeness again.
Catch my babies
When they are born,
Sing my death song,
Teach me how to mourn.
Show me the Medicine
Of the healing herbs,
The value of spirit,
The way I can serve.
Mother, heal my heart
So that I can see
The gifts of yours
That can live through me.

Prayer for a Sick Brother
O Lord, holy Father, creator of the universe, author of its laws, you can bring the dead back to life, and heal those who are sick. We pray for our sick molly ivins that she may feel your hand upon her, renewing her body and refreshing her soul. Show to her the affection in which you hold all your creatures.

Traditional Blessing and Healing Chant
Just as the soft rains fill the streams,
pour into the rivers, and join together in the oceans,
so may the power of every moment of your goodness
flow forth to awaken and heal all beings--
those here now, those gone before, those yet to come.
By the power of every moment of your goodness,
may your heart's wishes be soon fulfilled
as completely shining as the bright full moon,
as magically as by a wish-fulfilling gem.
By the power of every moment of your goodness,
may all dangers be averted and all disease be gone.
May no obstacle come across your way.
May you enjoy fulfillment and long life.
For all in whose heart dwells respect,
who follow the wisdom and compassion, of the Way,
may your life prosper in the four blessings
of old age, beauty, happiness and strength.

And she indeed looked very frail. We've seen her deal with her cancer for years and even when she showed off her baldness, it never looked as bad as this month. I really am afraid for her.

I wish her the best and I really hope she finds more strength to continue to fight this off.

Please, Molly, please get well.

44. She's a fighter
Ivins, a California native who grew up in Houston, got her third cancer diagnosis more than a year ago. She has undergone chemotherapy.

She was overwhelmed with advice and gifts after she wrote of her initial diagnosis of breast cancer in 1999. The outpouring kept her from telling readers of recurrences in 2003 and 2005.

Ivins said last year she isn't giving in to cancer.

"Maybe this is false bravado," she said in the Austin American-Statesman. "In some ways for me, this is like having a manageable disease. It's like diabetes. It doesn't mean it's not going to come get me in the end."

God bless you, Molly.

60. We miss your stating our views as you see them Molly
I always look forward to reading your columns in my paper and have missed them in their infrequency lately. Your are always so right on with your assessment of our situation with our current "decider". You have that certain "Texas" way of saying things that puts things right on the level of the current administration.

You have another fight at this time. Please dear Molly, fight for your life. Put all your energy toward killing those cancer cells that have invaded your body. Leave the other fight for the will of our nation up to us. We are beginning to step up to the occasion. This is the day of the Big Peace March in D.C. (Jan 27). Watch us march, know you have helped to open our eyes and encouraged our voices to be heard. Hope we will all be proud that we stood up against this evil foolishness that our nation is up to in Iraq. Hope you are proud too Mama, you have taught us well. Peace and healing be yours.

Thank you and love you,
Bubba
