SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Crews are searching about 60 miles south of San Diego in the sea for what is believed to be a Navy helicopter that went down.

Coast Guard and Navy aircraft are searching for crew and wreckage of the MH-60S chopper, which went down about 2:45 p.m. some 50 miles from Camp Pendleton.

It's not immediately clear if the crew was able to get out safely.

2. Sending good karma that way -
bad enough to lose them in Iraq - god, I hope the crew is ok.

Navy searches for 3 from copter crash

By ALLISON HOFFMAN, Associated Press Writer Sat Jan 27, 3:19 AM ET

SAN DIEGO - Navy vessels about 50 miles off the California coast searched Saturday for three crew members of a Navy helicopter that crashed during a training operation.

The Friday crash killed one crew member and left the remaining three missing as darkness fell over the Pacific.

The sailor died after being pulled alive from the water, said Navy spokesman Cmdr. Jack Hanzlik.

"It's a sad time whenever we lose shipmates like this, so our hearts and prayers go out to the families," Hanzlik said.

Search Ends for 3 in Copter Crash

Sunday January 28, 2007 7:16 AM

SAN DIEGO (AP) - The Navy called off a search Saturday for three missing crew members
of a helicopter that crashed in the ocean about 50 miles off California's southern coast.

Friday's crash during a training mission left one sailor dead, and the Navy had searched
for the remaining crew through the night and into Saturday afternoon.

"The cold water temperature and the time that elapsed since the crash occurred led Navy
officials to conclude that aircrew survivability is extremely unlikely," said Navy Lt. Cmdr.
Elizabeth Meydenbauer.

Meydenbauer said the Navy knew the location of the sunken helicopter, but had not decided
whether the wreckage would be brought up from the ocean floor.
