Ex-Cheney aide shares media manipulation

By MICHAEL J. SNIFFEN, Associated Press Writer 34 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - A smorgasbord of Washington insider details has emerged during the perjury trial of the vice president's former chief of staff.

For example, when Dick Cheney really needed friends in the news media, his staff was short of phone numbers.

No one served up spicier morsels than Cheney's former top press assistant. Cathie Martin described the craft of media manipulation — under oath and in blunter terms than politicians like to hear in public.

The uses of leaks and exclusives. When to let one's name be used and when to hide in anonymity. Which news medium was seen as more susceptible to control and what timing was most propitious. All candidly described. Even the rating of certain journalists as friends to favor and critics to shun — a faint echo of the enemies list drawn up in
Richard Nixon's White House more than 30 years ago.

The trial of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby owes its very existence to a news leak, the public disclosure four summers ago of
CIA officer
Valerie Plame's identity.

A private brainstorm of Plame's in 2002 brought a rain of public attacks on Cheney the following year. Cheney was accused of suppressing intelligence and allowing
President Bush to present false information about weapons of mass destruction in
Iraq.

Plame's husband, ex-ambassador Jo

That's also the line I picked up on. Hmmmm, I'd like to know how was on their friendly list. Some are obvious (like Judy Miller) and I think we all have our suspicions on who the others might be.

13. was Russert on the list, too?
With the word "Toady" associated with him.

and, who knows what is going on in the mind of Darth Cheney? He probably considers everybody in the media that doesn't offer to give him a blowjob upon meeting to be a potential enemy.

30. Russert was on the list, yes.
And he was listed as their favorite venue, their easiest venue for controlling their message. Sounds about right, doesn't it?

15. the media is a lot different now than back then
There was no RW talk radio back then, no Fox News or CNN, no USA Today. The country's newspapers were generally more independent back then as well...

So, even though Bush has done far worse than Nixon or Reagan, the RW has a huge support network in place now to defend themselves and obscure the truth.

5. Who is this writer - I'm impressed. I couldn't follow the transcripts
and live blog reporting at firedoglake, but I thought I got the essense and tidbits of what went on. This writer has done a great job of bringing out the best. Print this out and pass it out and tell people it's a good primer - and that they might as well be in on the beginning of this trial and what it's all about.

9. The White House must have had Rupert Murdoch....
on speed-dial along with NewsMax, the Moonie Times and most of the Reich-Wing media. I can't think of a single story, and I do mean story (as in fairy tale), that any of those conservative echo chambers wouldn't gladly parrot for the Bush White House.

The myth of the liberal media was well crafted and baited by the Reich-Wing and the mainstream media bit like a hungry shark, trying to appear non-partisan to the point of tilting the balance of "news" severely to the right. What the rabid right couldn't buy, they conned.

Manipulated? That would imply that the media was an unwilling dupe. Since the Cons own most of it it can hardly be said that they were manipulated. They were more of a willing participant in the lies of the White House.

I want to see the names of those conservative columnists that were invited over to Cheney's place.

His "friends" in the media were on a chummy chummy basis getting their talking points at his private residence on a Saturday morning. WTF!?

18. Friday, the government's favorite moment to deliver bad news.
Edited on Sat Jan-27-07 02:16 PM by Xipe Totec
Why?

"Fewer people pay attention to it later on Friday," Martin testified. "And in our view, fewer people are paying attention on Saturday, when it's reported."

As Martin rated their options, putting Cheney on "Meet the Press," NBC's Sunday morning talk show, "is our best format." Cheney was their best person for the show and "we control the message a little bit more," according to Martin.

Hey! What day is today?...

We see the result of massive prolonged propaganda after the Fairness Doctrine.

People who actually vote multiple times for a criminal incompetent like GW Bush.

How can there be that many millions of stupid people in one country? I am stupefied just like the Guardian.
