Lieberman may vote Republican in 2008 presidential race
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Joe Lieberman, a life-long Democrat until he became an Independent for the last election, said Sunday he would consider voting Republican in the 2008 presidential race.

"I'm open to supporting a Democrat, Republican, or even an Independent if there's a strong one," the U.S. Senator from Connecticut told "Fox News Sunday."

Lieberman ran for the Democratic party's president candidate in 2004. He became a shining star of the Democratic Party in 2000 when he served as then-Vice President Al Gore's running mate.

But his open support for President Bush on numerous issues, particularly the Iraq war, has ostracized many Democrats. He lost the Democratic primary in his re-election bid last year and had to run as an Independent to maintain his seat.

33. Yup. I swear he's hoping for a VP slot again
and knows full well that he's done being a Democrat. There's no chance he'd be re-elected in CT. At least as a Dem. Maybe if he just came clean and ran as a Rep.

85. Hi JerseyGirl, have you talked with any Dems who voted for Joe in 06 lately?
I haven't, but I sure wish I could! I'd love to know what they're thinkin' now! Trouble is, they are pretty damn quiet about it, so I guess I won't find out. I'd love it if some enterprising reporter went out and canvassed some Dems who voted for Joe and how they feel now.

I think Joe has lost his mind or just believes that he floats above it all. Perhaps it's the bitterness he feels at being defeated in the Dem primary. He's on the losing side and I always figured him to be a main chance kind of guy, given the way he "gamed the system" (to use Ned Lamont's artful description)both in 2000 (when he ran for VP and Sen. at the same time because he could)and in 06.

Not the ones I might be very curious about -- long-time Lieberman supporters and friends. I don't want to get into it again with them.

But I've got family, who have serious buyer's remorse now. I tried to tell them beforehand, but I assume they wrote my opinion off as that of a wild-eyed liberal. They know better now.

And wasn't one of the Courant's columnists writing about it a short while ago? Sounds like she also had voted Lieberman, feeling she ought to give him a chance, and seemed to be saying she was "had".

I certainly haven't heard one person happy about their vote for him, or happy with him.

Oh, to add: yes, I think there's a big part of this that's simply his absolute disbelief that he did so poorly in the presidential primaries, then got beat in '06 in the Senate primaries. I think he is just horribly affronted. This is HIS position, and how dare anyone not return him to office? Friends tell me he's this wonderful guy. Personally, I've never, ever seen that. I see a small man -- in every way -- acting like a petulant child. Makes him a perfect match for the guy occupying the WH.

You have heard of a lame duck president, well, that is what the bastard will become in 2008.

The republicans are in big trouble, and they know it. They have a considerable number of Senate seats up in 2008, and the odds are very good that the Senate will be Democratic, and NOT BY A NARROW MARGIN

I hope the people of Connecticut are happy

10. I don't care as long as he stays on our side so the Senate won't go back Republican. His one little
vote in the Presidential election won't make any difference, but his vote to stay with the Democrats in the Senate is huge. Maybe we can change that in'08, but until then, we need him.

He is perfectly willing to be used by the Republicans, and we Democrats are perfectly willing to use him.

12. he's already served his purpose
the committee chairs are set; the leadership is set. It does not change if he turns pug

how he votes on various issues is less important - sure, a votes a vote - but ONLY if something were split 100% on party lines is it crucial, and there aren't enough to overturn a veto even with him. So fuck him and the jackal he rode in on.

I bet Connecticut voters would like a do-over!

I say publically since he's done everything except come out and say he's a Repug.

But if it doesn't matter now and we maintain control thru '08, then screw him. Reid should take him off his committee assignments and relegate him to the trashbin where he belongs. I'm sick of being blackmailed by Holy Joe's Holy Ego.

Senate. We are not going hear the end of his constantly reminding the Democrats and the Republicans that they NEED his vote until he is marginalized by the next election, (optimistically) giving a much larger majority to the Democrats, or (pessimistically) to the Republicas.

Either way, I'm inclinded to think that Lieberman will be put to the curb by both parties...

Right now Lieberman is blackmailing Democrats by his mere presence in the caucus. Let's get rid of this worm once and for all by gaining a clear majority, and send Lieberman back to the GOP where he so rightly belongs.

A vote for a Democratic Senate candidate is a vote against Lieberman!

41. All those that voted for Lieberman because he was "Israel's best friend in the Senate"
as he was described by an AIPAC spokesman, are completely unmoved by whatever Lieberman says or does. To them, Israel is the only issue that counts. If Israel wants war in Iraq, they will support war in Iraq. If Israel wants war in Syria, they will support war in Syria. If Israel wants war in Iran, they will support war in Iran. As single-issue voters, they are on a par with the crazy Miami Cubans that hold US policy hostage, and right-to-lifers that hate anyone that does not embrace their extremist views on abortion.

I didn't talk to anyone == either in my personal canvassing or in my phoning Dems for Ned at his headquarters in New Haven == that voiced such an extreme position as you describe. And I talked to Jewish Dems in other towns, as well, particularly West Hartford. However, some did seem a little defensive, esp. after Ned won the Dem primary.

Do you have personal experience with people like this? I've lived in Westville among many Orthodox Jewish neighbors for over 20 years (I am not Jewish). It has simply not been my experience at all.

38. This is evidence...
...that Lieberman sold out all his principles so that his ego stays intact continuing to support an illegal war. And it is evidence the republican party has done the same in embracing Lieberman's fundamental liberal domestic policies. All of them are morally bankrupt and can go rot in hell as far as I'm concerned.

They choose a liar and breaker of federal election law over the Dem candidate.

If he wasn't keeping the Democrats in the majority in the senate I'd tell him, in the words of our illustrious VP who he loves so much, "Go f*ck yourself!"

during the campaign. I cannot wait until the dems pick up additional seats in '08 so we can relegate Joe to the bottom drawer forever.

72. I'm not a big fan of Ol' Joe but i'm not going to be on his case for this..
I think blind partisanship is destructive. While I can't imagine voting for anyone who has supported Bush, blind partisanship is too closeminded for me. And yes, I consider myself a flaming liberal. I just think party affiliation can be misleading. Case in point, Linc Chaffee would get my vote over Joe any day. And I also don't consider Joe a traitor, I just disagree with him.

This isn't surprising, as Joe has been "conditioning" people for his move to the Republican party. I think he's counting on McCain winning the Repub nomination and getting the VP nod.

84. Man, who wrote that crappy CNN piece? - his or her command of the English language is
pathetic:
"But his open support for President Bush on numerous issues, particularly the Iraq war, has ostracized many Democrats."
WTF?? Uh, hello, so-called reporter person, you clearly don't understand the meaning of the word "ostracize". Are there no editors anymore? Doesn't ANYONE read over this crap before it goes out???

And, looking at the piece again, there's this:
"Lieberman ran for the Democratic party's president candidate in 2004."

Yikes.

98. Why?
why does he even feel the need to make this public? Is he putting the Democratic party on notice that he is not one to be messed with? Is it because he feels the republic party may get the congress back and he wants to be on their good side? Is he telling the republic party that they can count on him as a VP candidate?

Until they can call it the Democratic party, they will be the republic party.
