Canada's wild mustangs endangered by unknown shooters
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070128/sc_afp/canadaanimalcrime_070128184554

OTTAWA (AFP) - Wild horses roaming Alberta province's western foothills are being shot illegally by unknown gunmen, putting them at risk of eradication, according to ecologists trying to save the herd.

Seven horse carcasses were found in recent weeks in backwoods about 130 kilometers northwest of Calgary, bringing to 20 the number of dead mustangs discovered nearby since 2005, according to the Wild Horses of Alberta Society.

Police said they recovered bullets, but have not identified a suspect.

The society meanwhile is offering a hefty reward for the capture of the "psychotic, trigger-happy individual" responsible for the animal killings...

1. Why the hell do people have to kill everything that lives?
This just so pisses me off, just like letting the gray wolfes be killed in I think is either Montana or Iowa..... Can't they just leave the damn creatures alone?

7. Heartbreaking

No excuse for animal abuse. I have encoutered herds of wild mustang in the Chihuahuan Desert. There is nothing more beautiful. It would take a real sadist to slaughter them needlessly. One wonders when these idiots will get sick of killing animals and switch to humans.

3. Something tells me this isn't any kind of psychotic
The article goes on to mention that local ranchers may be responsible, as horses graze much more than cows.

It may be pure cold-blooded financial motives, not psychosis.

The poor beasts...and I don't mean the ranchers. :(

4. I am a hypocrit in that I am a meat eater.... but...
if I had to kill my own creatures to eat, afraid I would either die of hunger or change what I ate.

8. There was someone shooting captive horses in north-central Alberta a while back
It seems like horses can bring out the worst in some people. It's really despicable.

11. This makes me want to go hunting in Alberta.
Know what I mean?

I'll bet that I could take a few of my friends to Alberta and turn this around right quick-like.

12. This happened in the states a few years ago

They never caught the killers, but there was a
situation going on to raise eye brows. The Bureau
of Land Management verses animal lovers. A whole
herd of horses were found slain, including foals.

Oddly, the Director of a prominent animal organization
turned up dead...killed in a one car crash. The Fund For
Animals was leading the crusade against the BLM and
their position (their "managing) on Americas wild horses.
