New anti-sealing group to lobby for licence buy-backs

By BRIAN HAYES Staff Reporter

Commercial sealers will have a new activist group nipping at their heels during this year’s annual hunt off Canada’s east coast.

Although they won’t have a physical presence on the ice fields, members of the month-old Atlantic Canadian Anti-Sealing Coalition, based in Halifax, will be closely monitoring the hunt in late March and April that involved 6,000 Atlantic Canadians last year.

"Our immediate goal right know is to show the world and the rest of Canada that the federal government’s claims that Atlantic Canadians support the annual commercial seal hunt are erroneous," Bridget Curran, one of the coalition’s founding members, said Sunday.

Ms. Curran said the majority of residents in the region oppose the hunt. She said her coalition has nearly 100 members representing a cross-section of Atlantic Canadians, and more people are logging on to the group’s website each day.

1. Good. I don't trust Canada's neoliberal government any more than I trust ours. (n/t)

2. I think that's a pretty smart approach.
The article clearly comes out and addresses the commercial industry directly while exempting native populations. They have specific ideas for how the federal & local government might support people who do work with commerical sealing operations. Seem like they're trying to be responsible about the effects of their won campaign.
