WASHINGTON (Reuters) - White House spokesman Tony Snow could not resist a good-natured jab at actress Jane Fonda for appearing at an anti-Iraq war protest nearly 35 years after she earned the nickname "Hanoi Jane" for protesting Vietnam.

"You know, I mean, it's nice to see Jane Fonda in front of a camera again," Snow told reporters when asked about the march on Saturday. He did not elaborate.

Snow said it was "perfectly appropriate" for Americans to protest the Iraq war if they desire.

"This is a vigorous democracy," he said.

But he said the protest did not appear to draw the 100,000 people that had been predicted by the event's organizers.

3. It's not like Jane hasn't been in front of the camera recently.

She was in Monster In-Law a couple of years ago, and looking quite beautiful I might add.

She also did a tribute to Lily Tomlin at the Kennedy Center last year, and she also looked great then.

Plus, Jane has the ability to speak well, motivate a crowd, and move people that George Bush sorely lacks. All in all, I say give Jane Fonda the White House and give * the boot! The world would be better off if we did.

They know Bush is dropping in the polls and they know they don't have anything to improve his numbers on the eve of his blunder into Iran, so they pull out Jane Fonda, the person the neo-con fascists love to hate, and make her the story. By linking her with the demonstrations last Saturday, BushCo and the Media hope to downplay the significance of the protests by equating Fonda with dissent against the President. They hope Fonda's approval numbers are lower than Bush's.

IMO, Jane has become so spoiled that she ACTUALLY believes that it is "all about her." <my personal opinion - could very well be wrong>

venues for her decades-old unwise decision to pose with the NVA.

Her cinematic and public service careers have been exemplary in the eyes of cross-generational millions of Americans who understand that none of us escapes this life without making mistakes, both small and big.

BTW, overall, her criticism about our nation's actions in escalating hellacious warfare in Southeast Asia was correct and timely.

I welcomed her voice in D.C. and will listen whenever she chooses to speak about illegalities committed in our name.

I don't fault her for what she did in Vietnam. Vietnam was a mistake as well, and I'm glad she helped to bring it to light. You'd think this country would have said "uh...no way, no how" after the French lost their butts at Dien Bien Phu in '54, but nooooo...:eyes:

26. What many younger people (< 45) don't realize is that there's still

a great deal of animosity for her that has not faded, even today, precisely because she went to NORTH Vietnam.

IMO, if she really wanted to help make this protest STICK, she would have been in D.C. only in spirit. Her presence served as a distraction. I really think that she's arrogant for having showed up. Back in the 60s, very few, and I mean, *very few* members of the military respected her for going to the NORTH to protest.

I am still working, and continuously urging myself to forgive her and I'm far from alone when you are talking about family members with loved ones in Vietnam who are older than 45 y.o.

She was selfish, but celebrities usually have that problem. No one who knows how much she was despised at the time and how much the right wing still hates her, can honestly say that Jane Fonda's presence Saturday helped our cause? If you can make a case, I would honestly be amazed?

But it's a free country and no one will tell her no, but her decision to come Saturday, IMO, was all about her own personal ego. :shrug:

Went to a VFW---went in to the bathroom and saw a picture of Jane Fonda in the urinal. Lost what little respect I had for the VFW. I personally think that Jane Fonda is a hero for going to North Vietnam. Actions like hers helped to bring an end to that awful war.
