Nine arrested in ant-war protests in congressional office buildings
January 29, 2007

WASHINGTON: Nine anti-war protesters were arrested Monday when they gathered in a House of Representatives office building to read off the names of American and Iraqi war dead.

U.S. Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said the nine were charged with unlawful assembly. Several dozen protesters congregated around a courtyard pool inside the Rayburn House office building, throwing yellow roses onto the ice as they recited the names of Iraq War victims.

The demonstration was a follow-up to Saturday's anti-war demonstration that drew tens of thousands to the Washington Mall.

Also on Monday, about 100 people staged a short demonstration in the Hart Senate office building, with demonstrators waving children's shoes to represent Iraqi children killed in the war and unfurling anti-war banners from the balconies around the building's atrium.

"We feel the American people don't know how many Iraqis have been killed because of the American invasion," said Medea Benjamin, co-founder of the national women's peace group CODEPINK.

Reading the names of the fallen is a reminder that Congressional votes do cost lives!

7. I think that's a big mistake to have them arrested.
Reading the names of the victims is an homage to the fallen soldiers.

Does this congress want to silence that homage?

9. How dare they speak the names of the dead!
Unlawful assembly my ass. Fucking read the constitution. Something about the right of the people to peaceably assemble.

11. My thoughts exactly!!! If there's one right we have, and there are at least 10
this is it!! Leave it to our "elected representatives" to not let a little thing like the Constitution stand in their way. Again. Well, that's it. Now I'm pissed!!

18. Arrested for unlawful assembly?
Huh, my constitution says that there shall be no laws against the "right of the people peaceably to assemble." And from the account published here, they were peaceably assembled. No one was being threatened or hurt, no clear and present danger was exhibited, no presentation of imminent force was made.

And no charges will ever be brought. Fortunately, by unlawfully arresting these people, their right to assemble peaceably was effectively terminated, and no judge will penalize the government authority that stole that right.
