US military prosecutors will charge fewer Guantanamo prisoners than originally planned when they issue the first batch of revised war crimes accusations this week, the chief prosecutor for the tribunals said.
Prosecutors had planned to charge up to 20 al-Qaeda and Taliban suspects being held at the controversial detention centre by February, including 10 who had faced trial under the old military tribunal system struck down by the US Supreme Court.
Australian terror suspect David Hicks is expected to be among the first to face new charges, after the original charges against him were dropped.
Prosecutors still expect to file some charges by Friday but new rules set out by the Pentagon earlier this month will make it impossible to try more than a handful, or even all of the original 10, chief prosecutor Air Force Col Moe Davis told Reuters ...
