Voice of America launches TV transmissions in Sandinista-governed Nicaragua
The Associated PressPublished: January 30, 2007

MANAGUA, Nicaragua: The Voice of America is going head-to-head with a cable network backed by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez with transmissions in Sandinista-governed Nicaragua.

The Nicaraguan company Earth Satellite Stations, or Estesa, has been transmitting the U.S. government-funded news broadcasts on the Channel 71 cable station since last month, the U.S. Embassy said Tuesday.

Estesa had already been transmitting the Chavez-backed Telesur, a new Latin American television network meant to provide a South American alternative to American-based news networks.

Chavez ally Daniel Ortega was inaugurated as president on Jan. 10 following a campaign in which he pledged to remain close to his leftist friends while also maintaining good relations with the U.S., which backed a guerrilla war against his socialist-style Sandinista government in the 1980s.

1. I hope no one listens. Radio propaganda is a source of nice
income for a few. Taxpayer money going to privatized propaganda. If it's the same as the 'target Cuba set-up'.

2. Oliver North went there personally to threaten them, and Jeb Bush stuck his round nose, in, as well,
everyone threatening Nicaraguans with dire consequences if they DARED to re-elect Daniel Ortega.

Once they moved ahead, and voted for their choice, voilá, baddabing, what do we have? Bush floods their airwaves with pro-corporate America radio, which, of course, favors U.S. domination, and plantation, and child labor, slave wage labor on the banana plantations, and sweatshops.

Good people would be ashamed to keep forcing this crap down the throats of innocent people who want their countries free of outside interference. Dole and Chicquita (formerly United Fruit) operate in Nicaragua.

4. Are they required to play this stuff?
Is Pres. Ortega allowed to cut this off? Maybe he will allow this and nationalize the banana farms. On second thought maybe not, Guatemala did that in the 1950's and were invaded by the US Marines with the blessings of the Eisenhower administration and the lobbying of United Fruit.
