Miller Testifies Libby Told Her About CIA's Plame (Update2)

Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Ex-New York Times reporter Judith Miller, who spent 85 days in jail rather than reveal Lewis ``Scooter'' Libby as a confidential source, testified he told her in June 2003 that an Iraq war critic's wife was a CIA agent.

Miller, testifying for the prosecution today at Libby's perjury trial in Washington, said Libby told her on June 23, 2003, that war critic Joseph Wilson's wife worked for the CIA. At another meeting two weeks later, Libby said that Wilson's wife worked in the Central Intelligence Agency section that focused on weapons of mass destruction.

``He said that his wife, referring to Wilson, worked in the bureau,'' Miller said ``I quickly understood that he was referring to the CIA.'' Under cross-examination, she acknowledged that she forgot about the June 23 meeting the first time she testified before a grand jury in 2005.
...

`Agitated and Frustrated'

At her June 23 meeting with Libby, he seemed ``agitated and frustrated and angry,'' Miller said. He was concerned that the CIA was backpedaling on its pre-war reports on weapons of mass destruction in Iraq with a ``perverted war of leaks,'' Miller told the jury.

At first, Libby referred to Wilson, a former ambassador, as ``a clandestine guy,'' though later in the meeting he gave Wilson's name, she said.

6. AP: Miller testimony contradicts Libby story
Miller testimony contradicts Libby story

By MICHAEL J. SNIFFEN, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Reporter Judith Miller testified Tuesday that former vice presidential
aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby identified a CIA operative to her on two occasions
on dates earlier than he has told investigators he first heard the name from another
reporter.

Miller, the former New York Times reporter who spent 85 days in jail trying to avoid
revealing these conversations, said Libby identified the wife of a prominent Iraq war
critic as a CIA employee in face-to-face meetings on June 23 and July 8, 2003.

Libby, then Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, told the FBI and a grand jury
that he thought he was hearing Valerie Plame's CIA job for the first time from NBC's
Tim Russert on July 10, 2003.

-snip-

The discrepancy over when Libby learned about Plame is a major element in the
charges on which he is being tried. He is not accused of leaking her name but rather
of perjury and obstruction of the investigation into how her name leaked. Libby now
says his memory failed him when he spoke with Russert and other reporters.

7. All witnesses so far contradict Libby's story.
Which was, basically, Libby was SO very, very busy with IMPORTANT duties of national defense that he paid little attention to, and had little memory of, what went on in OVP regarding discussions of Wilson and "the wife" (as Libby's attorney Wells kept calling her).

9. So that's something like 10 times in the two weeks prior
to July 10 that Libby spilled this info and to seven different people. This wasn't some minor piece of gossip. It was a pretty big part of his lafe at that time apparently.

I don't like to wish ill for other people, but I do hope Cheney is at least sweating a little more than normal right about now.

Because he'll be forced to testify at any subsequent investigation without the fifth amendment protections.

Has anyone ever turned down a pardon before?

All signs point to no pardon otherwise Libby would not be attacking Rove so viciously.

18. Seems she has about as good a memory as Libby
"Under cross-examination, she acknowledged that she forgot about the June 23 meeting the first time she testified before a grand jury in 2005."

I'd like to see a transcript of that testimony. . . . . If she is getting away with the "I forgot" defense against perjury, that basically exonerates Libby, too.
